I had to replace an otherwise sound crank in my chevy 350 because I had .026 in end play. The thrust flange was badly worn from the crank being loaded forward. I have seen this on manual transmission applications but I'm running a non-lockup 700R4. Will a ballooning converter's external horizontal dimension grow and cause this? Need to know if I need to invest in anti-ballooning platesor to look elsewhere for cause.

The converter can definately cause this. FRANK

I agree this is converter related.

check the converter, its very common on stock converters if there abused or overheated they (ballon) and they try push the crank right out the front.easy way to check converter is unbolt it from flexplate and push back into the pump if you cant or there is no clearance between the too. its probably the converter
