I have a friend that has a 2002 Z28 . How can we tell if it has the LS1 or LS6 block ? There is another guy interested in buying the car ,but only if it uses the LS6 block .

wouldn't be an LS6 unless the engine was swapped.

actually, some of the later '01 and most of the '02 F-bodies came from the factory with LS6 engine blocks. The internals aren't LS6 though, just the blocks. You would have to crawl under the car and verify the part #s on the block, which I don't have.

Performance wise, it means nothing. In fact, several engine builders prefer using an LS1 block since they seem a little stronger in certain areas.

Thanks Tony, had no idea.

Got this from LS1tech.com

About 10-15% of 2001 F-bodys and about 25% 2002 f-bodys got the LS6 block with standard LS1 internals.

Look on the driver side of the car, on the rear of the engin block pad. LS6 12561168

The LS1 12559378

Looked in the LS1/LS6 book.
Casting # for 2002 LS1 is 12559378.
Casting # for 2002 LS6 is 12561168.

if the block has that dull powdery look then it has a bottom ls6 block but will still come with the ls1 241 heads

i think if its missing the bullseye on the machined part of the front passanger head side it will indicate an ls6 block
