Hello, I’m new to the site and must say its looks like its coming along great. I usually post over at the mustang or mopar boards but think I will checking back here on a regular basis.
I posted something a while back on a mopar board and thought it might help some of the guys in here looking to put very cheap, easy to find, larger diameter wheels and tires on theirs. The mustang bullet wheels are a popular and cheap upgrade for many of the mopars but many of those are 17X 8. Some guys want the 9 inch rims or even the 10.5 and want to see how those fit. While I don’t have any 10.5 inch rims yet (hopefully in the next month or so) I do have some 17 X 9 cobra style wheels that I threw on my 1969 dodge coronet. Here are my experiences.
First off I am no tire/wheel expert. I am not saying that these wheels are good or bad just passing along info. I don’t really want to argue about spacer pro and cons or how these wheels look on the car. I think the style doesn’t fit the car. This is really more of a fitment guide I hope.
There are 17 X 9 2003/2004 mustang cobra wheels. They have 275/40/17 inch tires on them. The combo is the same on the front and on the back.
These wheels have the SAME offset as most of the 17X9 inch bullitt wheels often offered on ebay. I know people have had good luck with 17x8 mustang bullitt, bullet, bulett, bulett, bulitt, bullit (however its spelled) wheels and thought they may be curious how 17x9 looks. You can get many of the bullets wheels with the deep lip now and those tend to look better on older cars in my opinion.
The wheels are
2003 cobra
17X9
+26mm offset
which is a 6.11backspace
The car is a 1969 coronet 100% stock suspension and drum brakes. I have the stock rear spring locations (I.E. I don’t have the mopar performance relocation kit) There are no spacers on the car with the wheels.

My observations:
Again I am no tire expert or claiming this to be gospel. You should also be able to infer a lot of your own info from the photos.
The front looked pretty decent. You would have a good amount of turning radius and suspension travel. You may rub on full turn with a load on the suspension. I did not road test the car. Again this is without spacers. It sat in the fender a bit but didn’t look too bad. A half inch spacer would have looked much better. Some of the disc brake kits actually give this extra half in so you can run spacer free. I was surprised a 275 tire fit so well in the front. A 17 X 8 with a 245 looks like it would fit very easily.
The rear sat in WAY too far for my tastes. I measured over 2 inches between the tire sidewall and the fender lip. The photo shows how far away it was. In my opinion I would roll the lip and use a spacer or ideally use a 10 -10.5 inch wheel for the proper look. The 10.5 inch deep lip bullets on ebay may look awesome and I should have a set in a month or so. I will post pictures of those if you are curious. Tire to spring clearance was ok, tire to wheel tub was a bit tighter. Could use about another half inch. With the mopar performance spring relocation kit and a very small amount of wheel well work you would be ok.
Hope someone gets some use from this.
