View Full Version : oil in LT1 intake
I've gone and built something a little odd. It's a simple V8 but it has an LT1 intake on it that's been machined for a distributor. The car runs great but after a short while it blows smoke constantly. Get on it and the smoke gets excessive. I am getting a fair amount of oil into the intake considering this intake setup has maybe 10 miles on it. I have the PCV connected with a Uhose on the driver's side(like a LT1 vette). I have two breathers only on the valve covers. I believe I may be building too much pressure not only because it takes a couple minutes to start blowing smoke, but a small amount of oil is leaking from under the distributor collar. How can I determine if this is the case and what can I do to cure this? I know the LT engines are closed crankcase ventilation but why? Was it intake design or some other reason that necesitated this? I can easily add a vent line from the passenger side valve cover into the intake or TB but I am not sure this could solve my problem. I also feel this is a too much pressure situation because I have oil in the intake yet I have no vent lines coming from the valve covers or any other place that could suck up oil into the intake. My thoughts are it's coming up from the valley area through the bottom of the intake. There are holes and passages that lead to the valley area by design on these intakes. Thoughts? Suggestions? Most unplug the hose that runs to the passsager side of the throttle body from the valve cover,the throttle body suck oil out of the v/c.
I cant come up with a good idea why its building pressure in the intake.
I do a little research and see what I cant figure out.
Well, today I think I figured it out and I feel really dumb. I took the intake off cleaned everything up. Removed all the old RTV and gaskets. Laid the intake back onto the engine with no gaskets and the intake rests on the front and rear rails. The sides have about .030 clearence on each side. So I need to get it to the machine shop and have them take some metal off the front and back. I think these heads have been milled before which only makes my situation worse. I just hope I have enough metal on the front and rear to remove without going past the bottom of the intake. I'll measure tomorrow. Thanks. I'll let you know if this solves it. I feel confident it will as the gasket didn't appear to crush as much towards the bottom of the ports.
Oh and my intake gaskets were slowing getting saturated with oil. That tells me that the intake wasn't sealing correctly. How's that sound?

sounds like the problem,hope it works out.
I was going to suggest geometry as well and see that you check it or if you had checked it what your findings were. Glad you got her found out.
Intake is at the shop now. I will have it bolted down and know if that works or not by the weekend I hope. We will see.
