I finally got my engine running and I have a few questions. This is my first experience with fuel injection so I have a lot to learn.
I got it to start up and idle without any problem but it is eye wateringly rich even though the afr isays its at 14.3. I have leaned it out from there but it sounds best at 14.3. The timing is at 20. I really have only played with the base maps so far. The engine revs pretty freely so I would guess it is in the ballpark. Any ideas? Timing? Injector Phase angle?

Also, I cannot get the ECU to turn on the fuel pump. I have played with the prime time but no luck. I can't seem to find any other tables that address the fuel pump. I have run both the high side and low side connections to the FP relay. I don't seem to get +12 or ground out of either one. I am just manually turning it on right now.

Can anyone recommend a good tuning book? I have Ben Strader's Electronic Fuel Injection book but it does not cover the BS3. There seems to be alot more maps in the BS3 than the ones covered in the book. The BS3 manual leaves alot to be desired. I would like some "cause and effect" explanations.

Stay tuned, more questions to follow I'm sure.

Thanks,

Tim

Never mind about the fuel pump. I do have a good low side ground now for some reason. I have connected the positive side of the relay to the battery and the ECU is controlling it with the low side.

I'm a big proponent of giving the engine what it wants, so if it's happiest at 14.3 idle leave it there. I usually run 20-24 degrees of timing at idle with close to 40 at cruise areas. Total timing obviously depends on boost level, c/r, fuel used, intercooled or not, etc. but a decent safe point would be around 18-20 degrees at wot with a normal small block at streetable boost levels. You should be able to run more than that but it never hurts to sneak up on it.

I'm also new to the BS3 world of fuel injection. I just wired a 1955 chevy for a friend who's car has a mild 355 SBC, Hilborn Fuel Injection with a BS3 controller. After wiring the car to run a 50 BTC and phased the MSD Distributor at 38 BTC the car finally started and runs not bad. After 15 minutes or so it filled my shop will heavy black smoke, I mean eye watering... Can some please help? I need to figure out how to lean the motor down... I'm new and do understand fuel injection...

Thanks in advance...

BS3 sequential reqires cam and crank signals.
So if your dist has only crank pulse (8 triggers/dist. rev.) then you are not sequential, but batch fire and depending on injector size it is most likely wanting injector duty cycle very low and fuel pressure the same to idle.
Personally my BBC, na, and SBC 26lbs boost. w/efi like 34 deg @ idle.

Saw your post...
Im in no way a BS3 expert, but Ive got two street cars running on it with no problems. They are a BLAST to drive and the BS3 is extremely capable. Provided everything is hooked up right (crank trigger/modified FAST dual trigger distributor etc.) and the TPS checks out and youve input the correct information in the system pull down (injector size, etc.) you can start to tune it. start it and let it idle fat until it warms up. Check out the warmup tables but dont change anything . Once its up to temp, pull fuel out until the idle surges, Pull down the spark table and mak e sure you are at the advance you want, and then back to the fuel table to add fuel until things smooth out. Hopefully by now the A/F reading has got its act together (no header leaks to skew the reading) Depending on the motor (cam, compression, injector size, etc.) best idle A/F will vary wildly. I like it so it can idle out without polluting my small house first (13.6/1 with a high overlap cam surging a bit on the smallblock car, 14.6/1 on the big block with a EFi style roller cam). The new idle fuel number is now the starting point for your fuel table. Of course now the warm up table will be skewed by the amount (more or less?) that you changed the base idle fuel, so the next time you start the motor cold it will have different warm up characteristics... hopefully better! Theres a heck of a lot more, but I can answer some BS3 questions in specific
