The dreamers adverstised in hot rod. The actual street prices were alot lower then.

I remember in the summer of 88 a 69 real RS-Z/28 35k miles, with a 70 LT1 engine that was going for $3500. I tried to beg and borrow but could not come up with the dough.
I got my current 69 for $900 later that year, no engine or trans. Good solid 4sp black interior car that needed just quarters and outer wheel wells.

in 1989 my buddy picked up a '69 z-28 complete and running and only minor rust for $3500!!! it was a screamin deal even then considering I paid that much for my '77 truck! Had another friend got a '70 chevelle 454 for $5000!

I'm not sure how long it will last. For one thing, the big dollar players need to tire of the old cars. Then when people are not readily paying out over 1m for rare muscle cars, the prices will come back down some, and be more realistic.

The muscle cars are becoming collectables. The prices will not fall back down to cheap, but they will level off, the ultra optioned ultra rarities will still fetch big money, but probably topping 150k instead of 1.5m. When it becomes old news for hollywood, then the rich people will move on to the next thing. Look at Testarossa's in their peak, people were paying hundreds of thousands, today you can buy one for 50k, for a while they were dipping down to 40k. But more realistic was the Shelby Cobra 427, originals went over 1m but now have settled more realistically in the low hundreds.

The prices are unrealistic and only supported by a group of people with more money than sense enough to see a trend and avoid it or take advantage of it. Like the guy on Barret's who paid millions for a Hemi Convertible, "it's a nice car, it'll be a nice car to drive with the top down". Will he be able to sell it for a profit? No way. He will most likely take a huge loss on it.

As for when? When it happens it will be quick, because everyone will jump ship. No one knows when it will be or what will cause it. But when it does it will be good for us real enthusiasts, not the guys into it because they saw it on TV and have money to get whatever they want.

About 1992-93 I went to a shop near CHicago that had an all original 1970 Chevelle SS 454 hipo 4 speed car, completely restored with all markings stickers etc. Even had the rubber nipples on the redlines. Price? 45k. I was in high school, so it was a bit out of my budget. That thing sat there for months. Today, if that thing went up on Barrett's on the right day, it'd be over 150k.

I think everyone has a "fish that got away" story. When I was in high school (around '90-'91) my girlfriends dad had a '72 Pantera with 30K miles that he bought new and was just sitting in his garage. He offered me the car for $10k. I begged and pleaded with my dad to loan me the money but of course it did not happen. He sold the car at Barret Jackson later that year for somewhere in the mid $20k range.

Three years ago, my buddy bought a '70 Challenger with a decent body and paint (a good driver) and mostly new interior. 340 / 4 speed car (running/driving) -- paid $7,500. It wasn't that long ago that muscle cars were somewhat affordable.

The mid to late 80's were the "shoebox Chevy" years. Back then everyone wanted a '55-'57 Chevy. Notice the prices on those cars in the pictures. Today that trend has reversed, with musclecar prices going through the roof and if any of you haven't noticed, shoebox prices have been slipping.

I think I am lucky enough that chevelles are still affordable, I'm not gonna complain because I got the car in the year I want for $1000. Sure it needs everything but it at least I did not have to pay too much to gte my feet wet.

I think RIGHT NOW on car that is worth buying is a dodge vider GTS 97-98... they are going for high 30's low 40's and I think they have a lot of potential to become high dollar collectibles later on.

My father bought a 2004 cobra vert and he is keeping it 100% stock. How many 03-04 cobra's do you know of that havent been messed with ? How about in 20 years ? It's a repeating cycle IMO.
