I heard that the reason they are enclosed is because back in the day people use to hop trains and rob parts off of the cars. Is that true or just a made up story!!!

True. They're also that way to prevent people throwing rocks at the cars and other forms of vandalism. Back in the 80's I worked at a Caddy dealer and when the cars would come into the unloading areas they'd be out of gas. Seems the bums would start up a car to run the heater and when that car ran out of gas they'd just get in another one to get warm, then another....

yeah i grew up near the tracks of union pacific..i knew kids that would throw rocks at the windows of the cars..(I never did i swear)..lol

Back in the day, I used to work for a company that inspected cars for damage when they came off the rail cars. There would be missing radios, wheels, you name it. Those rail cars are pretty fortified, but people would still get in. We found a Suburban that bums had been in for quite a while; stunk like hell.

I used to load the rail cars and unload them back in the early 90's. American cars I unloaded went on ships to Asia.

Even with all the security on the train doors, the jerks got in every once in a while. They would get in and steal what they could.

One time we had a traincar loaded with brand new Starcraft converted high-dollar Chevy vans going to Japan. The A-holes got into each van and stole the stereos. They used a crowbar to break the nice wood dash covers and the dash boards to gain access to the stereos. Instead of using tools, they broke the frame of the dash with their crowbars to get the stereos out without damaging them. Once they were far enough out, they cut the wiring harnesses of the vans. Each van had to be sent to the local dealer for 6 thousand dollars of reapairs. I think there were 6 or eight vans total.

This was all topped off with a funny ending for the jack @$$es. The radios were special units that were built at the factory for the radio frequencies in Asia. So basically the radio part of the stereo was useless.

Now that serves them right. :jump: I hope Karma gets ahold of them.
