Yea, I screen capture them all as momentos.. sort of a dubious distinction.

Ebay makes it such a PITA to report this stuff.. there should be a "SCAM ALERT" button where it's easy to report this stuff.

This kinda makes me timid to use ebay. I love getting deals on it and have not been scammed yet. but how do these scammers get 4000+ feedback that is 99.9% positive? Those are the main things I look at when trying to figure out if I should trust the deal. In this scenario I would trust it, except I know that the car is rediculously low priced and I know the car and that it would not be for sale.

Edit!!! 68BNUT just made me realize that good accounts are being hijacked. I see now.

ps. Do you miss it at all?

Just a note. The latest scam is a second chance offer. If you bid on a car and get outbid, but very careful to any second chance offers. I had two in the last week that had the same idenical response. One was on a car a member here had for sale and we had talked so I knew it was not his email addy listed. Be sure to demand and phone number and talk to the seller. That will scare the scammers. I have not bothered reporting it since ebay already knows about it. Probably not a lot they can do anyway.

I've had to contact ebay several times about Bogus listings, emails and the like.

What you need to do is forward the email/page to them. You send it to:

[email protected]

They will get back to you twice. Once acknowledging receipt of your email, then a second time letting you know what's going on.

Hope this helps.

For those curious it had a BUY IT NOW price of $11,500 and a opening bid of $700.

Car was said to be in Texas even though it's really in San Diego, CA.. lol

Im just amazed that anyone falls for this anymore.

Subject: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro for Sale

Good day,

First of all I must thank you for your interest in purchasing my car and for your email.

I want to let you know all the details about the car so everything will work fine.

The car is in a perfect looking and working condition. It was kept only for collection, so the mileage is low on it; it can be used like an every day car. It has no scratches or any kind of damages, no rust or bondo, everything works on it. The motor runs very well. This is a classic car that has a lot of the original parts and the tires are almost new. The title is clear.

This is a 1969 Chevy Camaro. 4L60E Automatic transmission, Yank 3800 torque converter, 3.73 rear-axle ratio, 3.5” aluminum drive shaft, B&M deep trans fluid pan, Auburn posi unit , Strange axles with C-clip eliminators , Alumrad Custom high capacity aluminum radiator , Dual SPAL Electric fans, 160 degree Hypertech thermostat , Reprogrammed fans (LS1 Edit) , Mezier electric water pump and much more.

The photos are recent and show the condition of the car, so please take a look at them. I attached them in this email.

The price I want to obtain on it is $11800 US ( eleven thousand eight hundred dollars).

If you are interested in buying the car please contact me further.

Thank you, I will be waiting your email.

Hello again,

Thank you for your quick answer.

I am sorry for the mistake I made in my ad with the location of the car, that was just a misprint. I am located in England, as I recently moved here. I tried to register the vehicle here, but it will take too long and I have to pay very expensive duty taxes.

This car meets all Environmental Regulations in the USA ( DOT , EPA ) . It has a clear title issued in US and it can be registered anytime under your name without a problem. It is an US car ( US model , US specifications ) and the odometer is in Miles, speedometer is in Miles per Hour ( MPH ). There are a lot of things which have priority now, so, this car has to go.

The shipping will be made via ocean and the car will be delivered to your door. The shipping company I will use makes door to door deliveries and the estimated delivery time is 21 days. I will send the car with all the papers. Time is really an issue and we have to move fast, so I will support 65% of the shipping costs, the remaining 35% will be supported by you. The car will be insured in case of damage and there will be no custom fees or additional taxes to pay as all the documents are American and the car is an US one.

I hope you are serious in your intention for buying it. Regarding the payment I want to end this deal in a safe method for both of us. In order to proceed with the shipping I need a deposit confirmation of $3000.00 US funds. The payment must be done using a money order service.

I'm a fair trader with a very good feedback on eBay which is the proof that I have closed a lot of successful deals.
During this period I learned that the best deals are closed when the risk involved is minimum. You will arrange payment through Western Union Money Transfer Service.
I have something safe for you because I want you to be sure that you will receive the vehicle and I hope we will collaborate in the future, as well.

Look what I can do for you:

-you will make the transfer to my location but not to my name (you will use your best friends name for example as the receiver's name) so you can be sure that I will not be able pick up the money until you get the car. So you make a deposit at Western Union and then give me the transfer's details ( sender name, receiver name, money transfer control number-MTCN). With these informations I can check the transfer online.
After I check it and see that the funds are available, I will send you the car immediately and I will provide you with the tracking number, so you can be able to check the vehicle's way to your door. Only after you will receive the car and confirm that it is like I described it, you will have to change the name of the transfer with mine so I can collect my money. So until you will have the vehicle in your hands the money will be deposited on your best friend's name at a Western Union office. I will allow 3-5 days for inspection, and I am sure there will be no problems and that the car will pass the inspection tests as it is a state of a machine. I offer a complete customer satisfaction guarantee or your money back. This policy means, that if the vehicle is not as described then you may return it for a 100% refund. If the car is returned, it must be returned in the exact condition as shipped and it will return on my costs.

I think it is better to not inform Western Union that you will change the receiver's name in a few days because it is possible they ask you to pay the fees twice (fees that are quite big for such amount); also when you go to the Western Union office to make the transfer, please don't tell the employee that the money are for a purchase because here, in this country, I must pay some additional taxes, for making commerce, when I have to pick up the funds. Please say that you send the money to your friend or to your partner.

My old buyers of course make the transfer at Western Union directly to my name which is easier and I will be happy if you trust me; but because it is our first deal I proposed you this very safe and efficient method so you can only deposit the funds first and after you get the car allow me to cash them.

After you've completed the transfer you will receive a confirmation that will allow me to track the transfer online.
Here are the details that I need:
-sender name and address
-receiver name
-exact amount wired
-MTCN # (10 digits)
-if it is possible a scanned copy of the receipt format .JPEG for me to add to the documents.

As soon as the payment will be confirmed and the money properly sent, I will IMMEDIATELY proceed with the shipping . The payment is fully refundable if for any reason you do not accept the vehicle or if it has scratches, hidden defects, or it is not as advertised.
After the inspection period ends, you must send me the remaining part of the amount.

Here is my name and address you need for the transfer:

Claire Chaners
162 Cowley Road, city: Oxford
zid code: OX41UE, country : England.

If you agree with these terms, let me know and I will be more than glad to start and complete the transaction with you. Thank you and I hope that you will have the pleasure to drive this machine.

Kind regards, Claire Chaners.

Yeah, Western Union. That's safe. That's why eBay explicitly states never use it and if you do, they won't back you. And why do the two of you need to move fast?

It's a shame people fall for this stuff.

If there weren't people would stop doing it. I knew someone who was unsure and had me look at what was going on. Similar scenario except it was a basic car, at a reasonable price, and it was a fake "second chance offer" and not an actual stolen account.

These scams exist because ebay and more importantly--Western Union could care less about the problem. As a third party, they are not affected by the fraudulent transaction--so why should they care? Which is precisely why the scammers specify Western Union.

Western Union was sued for negligence and settled. As part of the settlement, they were forced to initiate an ad campaign to increase fraud awareness. "Do not wire money to strangers" But that little phrase is bad for business--particularly internet business. So they hung signs in their stores. Obviously those signs are not visible to their virtual customers. On their website, the "Fraud Awareness" campaign is limited to fine print. and there is no tool for reporting fraud on their website.

It's sad that the scammer will actually walk into the Western Union's destination store and receive fraudulent funds. The bad guys are right there! The destination Western Union office is in a perfect position to contact their local authorities and have scammers arrested on site. They choose not to get involved.

The only thing left to do is to personally contact authorities in Oxford, England. Enough time has passed that the scammer is already cautious. If "Claire" actually goes for it, the authorities might agree to wait in the store for "Claire" to appear. But will the authorities go to all that trouble?

Alternatively, you could tell Claire that W.U. recommends against wiring funds to strangers. Offer to FedEx a check directly to the address provided. See what happens. Maybe she (he, it) will provide an alternate address. Also, ask her to email some naked pictures of herself in compromising positions.

Check out 419eaters.com (think that is the site, can google to get the right one).

It's about people who purposefully mess with these crooks. Best read is about the church of painted breast or something where a guy in england actually managed to take money from the Nigerian crook.

I found someone who admitted to being scammed by one of these, a vendor/rep who we buy from occasionally, fell for it on a chevelle convert. in CA for $6500; more involved scam, even sent him paperwork, a call from a 3rd party "ebay" rep who would handle the shipping, paperwork, etc. He ended up getting about 1/2 of his money back on that one, but now I don't know if I should buy from him anymore... not the sharpest tool in the shed if you fall for that! I've seen the same thing on ebay on a lot of higher priced items- check compact tractors or tractor/loaders, all full of "like new" kubota's for $2500! -Dan

True,

You should have told them you were willing to pay cash as a down payment to hold the car. You could make up an excuse that you don't want the IRS to know where your funds are going...like they did on the W.U. excuse...so you were going to need a physical address.

How many one time sellers have that much information on how to handle a car from country to country, wire transfers, money orders, etc. That should be a red flag. The English is getting much better. I used to be able to tell it was just a Nigerian from reading the broken English and translation errors.
