The world's lightest carbon fiber/magnesuium street wheels are now available in the United States. Rennworx will distribute the wheels — developed by developed by Dymag in the UK — in America starting immediately. Each carbon fiber rim is fabricated using a solid metal mold which ensures they are made to a close tolerance. Lightweight wheels significantly reduce the moment of inertia and drastically cut the amount of power required to turn the wheel. The Dymag carbon wheels weigh about 13.23 lbs (other documents say 14lbs) each, according to the company. Consider that a standard Porsche 18" wheel weighs about 30.86lbs. That means a stock Porsche could lose 70.55 lbs by switching to Dymag wheels.

The next logical progression in removing unsprung weight will finally be made available to U.S. enthusiasts. Rennworx Ltd., a company that imports a variety of top dollar rims and parts, has agreed to bring Dymag's full lineup of custom carbon fiber rollers. Their products have found their way into the wheel arches of some top dollar machines, including Ascari, Mosler and Koenigsegg.

Beyond the subdued bling factor, the new wheels provide a number of dynamic benefits, including improved acceleration, braking and steering feel, the ability to allow softer dampening settings and the capability of dissipating heat more efficiently than conventional forged or cast rims.

Cost? This is one of those instances that if you have to ask, well, you know the rest.

PRESS RELEASE

LOS ANGELES, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- It was only a matter of time until race bred innovations brought the latest in Carbon Fiber technology to the street. That time has arrived. RENNWORX LTD. INC., the source for exclusive brands as WORK WHEELS, MANTHEY and other high performance brands is now the first and exclusive US distributor for the world's lightest STREET/RACE CARBON FIBER/MAGNESIUM wheels! Developed by DYMAG in the UK, and fit to the world's most exotic Super cars including, the Koenigsegg CCX, Ascari and Mosler, these wheels are the lightest, most sophisticated automotive wheels currently available. Each DYMAG wheel is made up of a carbon fiber barrel and forged magnesium center disc. Center disc and barrel are attached by specially coated titanium hardware.

Each carbon fiber rim is fabricated using a solid metal mold which ensures they are consistently made to a very close tolerance of accuracy straight from the tooling. This also gives a very high quality, durable finish which is resistant to brake dust, salt, ultra violet and the usual forms of corrosion. Carbon fiber in this form is not only very strong, but is also quite resistant to shock. It will not shatter as evidenced by its use in the construction of formula one chassis and aircraft wings.

The low weight but high stiffness of carbon fiber rims produces a very light weight rim to the wheel ratio, significantly reducing the moment of inertia and drastically reducing the amount of power required to turn the wheel. Consider that a standard Porsche 18" wheel weighs about 30.86lbs, the DYMAG CARBON FIBER/MAGNESIUM equivalent weighs around 13.23lbs for a total weight savings of approximately 70.55lbs per package!

The effect of carbon/magnesium wheels when fitted to the car is to reduce the gyroscope effect of the wheel and ultimately producing the following effects:

1. Improved acceleration
2. Improved braking, reduced stopping distance
3. Lighter, sharper steering
4. Allows for softer damper settings giving more tire contact & therefore
better grip.
5. Tire temperatures are more stable
6. Improved wheel & tire balancing

And let's not overlook the visual impact which is nothing short of stunning! Center discs can be color coded to match or contrast the vehicle's color.

In addition to fitments for Ferrari, Porsche Carrera GT and other high end vehicles, Rennworx will custom build the new CARBON FIBER/MAGNESIUM wheels in 18", 19" and 20" sizes to fit virtually any make and model.

Eclipse Ralliart uses DYMAG Carbon Magnesium Rims.

Technical Specification.
The best-selling import coupe for the past 15 years, Eclipse was redesigned for 2006 and Mitsubishi design engineers wasted no time giving Eclipse the Ralliart treatment.

Special attention was paid to increasing horsepower and torque, adding all-wheel drive capability for improved power in a variety of driving conditions while minimizing weight. To boost horsepower to an estimated 400 hp, a turbocharged 4G63 engine was borrowed from the Lancer Evolution and supplemented with a custom air intake and other HKS performance parts. The concept Eclipse's rally prowess is enhanced with the all-wheel drive system currently available on the Endeavor and Lancer Evolution as well as a six-speed manual transmission. Lightweight carbon fibre was used extensively in the roof, hood, fascias and front fenders.

The custom exterior is enhanced by Hot Red Mica paint, specially formulated by PPG for this concept. The Eclipse Ralliart rides on 20-inch high-performance Dymag carbon fibre wheels with AVS Sport Yokohama tires. Interior enhancements include Recaro performance seats trimmed with leather and Alcanterra suede, four-point restraints, racing gauges and a Rockford Fosgate premium sound system.

Dymag are proud to be involved with this concept project and would like to express their sincere thanks to all the staff at Mitsubishi for their positive feedback and material supplied related to this article.

Found this at www.caranddriver.com

Light as a feather, stiff as a board: According to super-car-builder Warren Mosler, the MT900S (http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtests/10768/road-test-review-2006-mosler-mt900s.html) (C/D, April 2006) will be the first production car with carbon-fiber wheels. Made by Dymag, the wheels have a magnesium center hub connected to a carbon-fiber rim and weigh considerably less than the standard aluminum versions. The front 18-inch wheels weigh 14 pounds, 10 fewer than the aluminum wheels, and the 20-inch rear wheels save 11 pounds each. No word currently on the cost of the new wheels and whether there will be additional applications. If you ever see a Mosler up on blocks, now you’ll know why.

14# is VERY light but Porsche's 30# is VERY heavy. I think an 18" gramlite is around 19#. The 5#x4 wheels=20# of reduced rotating unsprung weight vs. mega cost isn't as appealing. But can you really put a price on bling?

Didn't Callaway use Dymag wheels on some of his TT Corvettes in the late 80s / early 90s ??
