View Full Version : Paint or Powder Coat - Engine / Tranny?

The question I have is whether it is better to paint or powder coat an engine or transmission. I am currently swapping transmissions - and I was reading that powder coating an engine or transmission causes more heat to be retained in it. I heard that the temp difference is between 5-10 degrees. Is this true? The price difference is like $50 between having it painted or powder coated - but if powder coating is going to cause more heat on the tranny - then I will spend the $50 now to have it painted - to help the cooling later on.
Any thoughts?

Somewhere in the back of my head I think I've heard of transmission cases being powder coated. On the other hand not only is powder coating likely to retain more heat than paint because it's thicker, it also melts.

If your engine or transmission sustains a heat at or over 400* F to melt the powdercoating, I think you have bigger problems.

Powdercoating an engine is a tedious task and is probably best left for show cars. Do yourself a fovor and just buy some POR-15 engine paint and call it a day.
If you do get your block powder coated, make sure it's a shop that has done it before and REALLY knows what they are doing.

Paint.
PC is an insulatior that will retain more than it will reject heat. If it were a trailer queen.... sure. A driver, then no.
