View Full Version : Can This Roof be Saved

These are pictures of the left front corner of the roof of my 69 RS. There is no outside surface rust, but the steel was so thin in four areas that I was able to push a screwdriver right through it. I've already cut rust from the windshield recess area, see picture and started spraying Metal Ready on the panel from underneath. Can I save the roof panel by using all metal or POR 15 or should I cut out the thin areas or should I just cut the roof off? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've already replaced the quarters and have yet to weld the roof to the new quarters.

put a roof on it and be done, the dynacorn roof fits nice, i just finished doing one yesterday
that roof is done,
note, melt the lead out with a torch, do not grind it out, even a little propane torch with map gas will work perfect
, i only trimmed the lip that sets inthe rain gutter channle so i could square up the roof, then glue the rails and weld the sail panel and front and rear window channel

We replaced the roof on my '69.. I think it was the Goodmark roof. Anyways, it fit pretty good and was easier than dinking with the rotted out roof.

I vote for putting on a new roof, you will be better off in the long run.

If you're putting screwdrivers through the roof, just re-skin it and be done. Just a note; that's lead in the quarter and a-pillar seams.

OK. You've convinced me to cut the roof off, so I ordered a new one today. Hotrdblder offered some tips for replacement. If anyone else would like to offer something to make it go as smooth as possible, I'll take all the advice I can get.

Thanks for the input.

Stop pushing screwdrivers through your roof.

A propane torch is enough to get the lead out.

I ran into the same type of problem as you ,I went out one day and was sandblasting drip rail area & started blowing holes thru roof panel due to back side being rotted out .So I then cut old roof off & replaced panel & made the choice to shave off drip rails , car is not totally done but I am very happy with look so far

I'd just suggest taking your time and getting it lined up right the first time. A little extra attention to detail will save you hours in bodywork, or someone else hours and you $$$.
