View Full Version : Anyone seen a Pro-touring Grand National?

I've been thinking about ditching my GMC truck and finding a grand national or T-type to use as a daily driver. So when I started looking for info on the web I couldn't find anyone who has done the PT treatment on a GN. Everyone I've seen is either stock or heavily modded for drag racing. I've seen some really well done Monte SS's but no Grand nationals. Seems like a natural thing to do, since all the G-body upgrades would work. Or am I just missing something? :hmm:

One of the trickest cars I've seen was a GN in black/silver. Lowered, lots of suspension mods, big brakes/tires. Just a really trick car.

That car was built by Heath Elmer, and had I sold my Turbo Trans Am in time it would have been mine (it was on ebay a couple years back just a couple weeks prior to my TTA selling... drat!)
Info on it here: http://www.gmhightechperformance.com/features/0111gmhtp_gwhiz/

Louisville, Ky.
As a matter of fact, I'm heading out the door this afternoon to go check out a 3 owner 73K mile car about 2 hrs away.:drive:
And Man, the PT look really makes the regal's lines stand out.

Well, it was a 3 owner car, and it did show 73K on the odo. The guy had Macco paint it (Crap) and let it sit in his yard for the past 7 years. Man, if that is the condition I'm gonna find these cars in for $9,000, I'm gonna have to rethink my goals.

I can get pics and more info on my friends that he is selling. I looked at it and it was in pretty good shape. Nice interior, pretty good paint (repainted obviously) and seemed to run good. The brakes have been changed over to vacum already. It doesnt' seem to have ever been wrecked and appears to be all stock other than the mufflers. He told me he wanted $10,500 for it, but is willing to "listen". If you are interested, let me know.

Well its not a GN but it is a Buick! (LS-2, Global West Suspension, 17" Billet Aluminum Buick Rallyes)
I think a PT GN would be killer as well, and you'd probably attract some attention as there aren't many Buicks in this game yet.

If you are looking for a GN u better have your money right..They are the most expensive G body cars from the 80s but most powerful so go figure....You can also just get a regular Regal and do the same for less...

SicMonte, I would like to see what was done to the frame, cutting & bracing to allow the wider tires.
Thanks,

Heath Elmer is the man to talk to about pro touring a GN. He has had several cars in PHR. I think the name of his company is Arizona Rods and Restorations but I am not 100% sure. FYI my neighbor has a sweet 87 bone stock GN for sale for around $14k.

Even the most pricey GN is only just approaching what 1st gen Camaros are bringing, So in my mind, under 12k for a solid low mile GN to start with is a good investment.

I remember that one. I think it was a "silver state" car. IIRC Bill Osborne (the chassis guy that helped make "Big Red" happen) did the suspension.

My goal is to turn my Buick into a PT machine. I have a set of control arms, some Eibachs, a rear sway bar, and some new shocks waiting for me to pick up. Allthough anything would be an improvement over the way in currently handles.

When I'm finished with our '81 Regal, I think we'll let it go for about $6500. It's mostly a really nice driver that you can set up for yourself. It's rust free, 79K, 16" Iroc wheels (refinished), converted to R-134, converted to serpentine belt system from a 4.3 V6, new vinyl top, 350 Chevy motor (nothing fancy though), F41 Monte Carlo SS front/rear anti-sway bars, Mark VIII fan w/controller, etc. Email me if you might be interested...this car kinda fell into my lap and I've been playing with it. I'm painting it the factory bluish/green unless a buyer really wants a different color. -Jabin

Well I just got done going thru my GN with a completely rebuilt full roller motor all port matched with champion aluminum heads and all powdercoated components, new big ass turbo, Eibachs, AFX spindles with ATS billet steering arms, SC&C upper control arms, C5 Corvette brakes, 17" Torque thrusts that are being powdercoated black with custom turbo 6 logo centercaps, G-Force tires. A bunch of other upgrades as well. Its a T-top car with a next to flawless paint job. This has been my daily driver for coming on three years. Got it in Tennessee and drove it to Detroit and then to Vegas with no problems. Probably my favorite car I've owned so far, but I need to get rid of it to afford my mortgage payments on my new house. You can see pics of it before all the mods on my website. I will post pics as soon as I get some since I just got it all dialed in tonight and had it on its maiden voyage...WOW these things can be made to handle! Looks good in the weeds now. Thought I'd throw that out there since it will be for sale soon. I haven't even thought of a price yet, but if anyone is interested let me know.

Here's one I snapped before bringing it home today just for you. I haven't powdercoated the rims yet or gotten the centercaps done yet. Still have some detail stuff to do on it. Runs like a champ though. Long block was built by Mike Zimmermann Racing. Pretty much anyone that hangs out in the GN realm should know that name. I'll get some more pics as soon as I can clean it up now that its home.

Bill,
The car handles awesome. I've been putting it to the test hard since I got her done. Huge props to Marcus over at SC&C on the control arms. This was one of the easiest cars that I have had to align. The springs have settled about another 1/2" from the picture above and its sitting LOW. The C5 brakes work very well. I actually feel safe driving this car in any conditions. Handling is is exceptional...I can push the car hard through chicanes and it is very predictable and stable. The car just loves to be driven hard. Honestly I couldn't be happier with the overall performance. Nothing like taking the T-tops off and blasting through traffic. Love it!
And that is my unbiased opinion.

If you wouldn't mind . . ....
What's the wheel size & back-space F/R?
What did you do to get the TT2's to work w/the C5 brake pkg?

Great news Shane. I can not wait to drive the bu. Hopefully I will get to here in about a week. I am also hoping my budget built bu will kick some major camaro butt here in Sept. on the autocross....
ScotI, We will be using 1/4 spacers for the TTll's if I do not buy other rims.

I finished installing my Eibachs and shocks this weekend. I'm very happy with the results. It does sit a little too low in the rear for my tastes though.
