Below is the pic of 2 tstats i have. The silver is the regular type you can get at any parts store and the other is a mr. gasket/ milodon style. They both are 160* stats and open at the same time. The brass colored one looks like it would let more flow thru per minute. What are your thoughts or preferences

you are correct, the brass one is a "hi-flow" thermostat. I popped one into my engine and got about 5-8* cooler water temps.

Engine, also what about drilling 2-3 holes in the tstat as i have been hearing. should this be done and if so where do i drill?

Drilling holes in the T-stat is done using the OE style (silver one) in order to gain a bit more flow through it, and it also helps in "burping" the cooling system when you install one and start to re-fill the radiator. Helps the air bubbles to leave the cooling jackets in the block quicker. The holes would be drilled in the flat part of the stat.

However, this company Stewart Components

who make some kick ass waterpumps and such, highly recommend the Hi flow stat with all of their 4 stages of pumps. However, they also modify that same thermostat with holes drilled into it for even more flow when using ther stages 2, 3 and 4 pumps.

But I wouldn't try to drill any holes in that stat at home, not sure if they do anything special to them other than drilling the hole. Looks easy to screw up.

I use this style. It is the Robert Shaw style t-stat I also drill small holes in the rivets I marked just to burp the system.
t-stats dont work well with air under them
