hello,

I am building a 67 camaro hotrod. Does anyone have any info on tubular a arm and coil over shock kits?? IE. Which work or dont work the best? I have been looking at the Global West,Control Freak Suspension and Detroit Speed Engineering products. The DSE system looks like alot of work and $$$$$. Is it worth it?? Any additional info on disc brake systems would help, BAER or Willowood?? OH Yah one other thing I have heard that Powdercoating will weaken my subframe. TRUE or False??? I have heard good things about a material called R 15. How does this hold up compared to powdercoating??????

Thanks,

Steve M.

I have DSE stuff and can say it rides and handles truely awesome. I would always use Baer brakes over any other . They are a very well thought out kit and are a true bolt on .

as far as powdercoating the subframe and weakening it , I call BS!!!

I hope not..my subframe is powdercoated. :) but seriously, I can understand someone thinking it because of heating the metal to bake but it is no where near hot enough to weaken the frame in my opinion.

What powder coating will do, however, is hide the beginnings of a crack until it's too late. If you're really gonna beat on your car, we suggest not powdercoating anything unless it's clear.

Id say Global West or DSE for arms and they have a c/o kits that goes right along with them. Are they worth it ?? I dunno, what are you really gonna do with the car ??...

ATS for spindles and that fit real brakes, like Touring Classics or APRacing if you really wanna step up to real brakes...

AND then Matt chimes in while Im typing...

False. Powdercoating doesnt weaken a frame. It will however, hide stressline/hairline fractures and/or cracks though.

POR 15 is alright. If you apply it correctly... but it hides little cracks too.

I heard about another company that is likely to produce tubular arms in the very near future too. From what I understand, there won't be anything ground shaking in terms of differences, there is only so much that can be done. But they will have some features that the others currently don't, and won't hit the factory Upper Control Arm mounts on the frame when using the Gulstrand mod, lots of positive caster, and lots of static negative camber as you would want to set the car up for track sessions or hard street driving (first gen Camaros....). Sounds like weeks before prototypes will be done, and production won't likely happen until later this year, but worth keeping an eye out for......

Oh, and they will work perfectly with the fabulous AFX spindles from American Touring Specialties, too.

Thanks for the clarification on the POR 15. I was thinking of using it on the floor pans and wheel wells, but I do not know if this is a good application?? The manf. website states that UV rays will break down the material and suggests a top coat! I dont know if this would be necessary underneath the car and wheel wells. The painter wants do a stock paint/undercoat, but this car will be driven and I want to keep it looking good and would like it to be a little better looking than stock!

I have seen POR 15 turn out really, really nice. Most applications that I have witnessed were on the floor pan and inside the wheelwells.... and when applied, I guess the right way (whatever that is), it looked just as smooth as if it were painted. And I believe it is quite a bit more resilient that just mere paint.

I have heard about the top coat stuff.... but know nothing about the real skinny. There is a bunch of cats over on camaros.net that have used this religiously with nothing to say but good stuff about it.

I have complete bolt on C4/5 and ZO6 brake kits that work with stock drum spindles, no machining needed.

Fixture jig the frame rail and weld entire perimeter and power coat it. I have race the clips for years with out any problems.
