View Full Version : C4 front susp into the Nova

I picked up an 85 vette front end because of it's shorter track width and non ABS to put into my 63 Nova. I have been procrastinating this install for a few weeks now due to heat but I finally bit the bullet.
The width of the frame head on the car was almost an exact match to the stock Corvette cross member. I will need to c-notch the frame rails about an inch to clear the steering arms though.
I have been thinking about running some take off 9.5" C5 wheels with a +65mm offset. That should drop about 3.5"-4" from the track width and give them enough room to tuck into the fender wells.

I was quite surprised myself. The only drawback I see is how wide the track width is(about 61" rotor to rotor). Most people prefer a big lip wheel but I don't mind running a deep back space set up. I am actually thinking I could get a 10" wheel up front if I found the right offset. There is plenty of room to go inboard. Of course then I'll have to cut the rear end up to make sure I can fit a 12"-13" wheel out back. :yum:

As soon as I saw that I thought of the "Novette" project done by Lil John Buterra in Hot Rod in the early 80's. I think they did the exact thing. I have the issues of the build somewhere. Looks like quick clean install.

Nice work ... keep the pics coming.
I don't know if you've mocked up the engine yet, but I'd guess you'll lose the firewall when that happens (no big loss). C4 (C5 and C6 too, btw) racks pretty much force the engine behind the rack, assuming you've preserved the OEM mount points.
As far running a "deep lip" wheel, that's actually bad for handling. There's a reason modern suspension geometries all use lots of back-spacing in the wheels. So tuck those wheels up inside those fenders, and show us some more!

Thanks for the info John! I am quite a noob when it comes to suspension so every little bit helps.
Yes, the motor I had planned on using is not going to work anymore so I have been contemplating an Ecotec. My only issue at this point is finding a tranny that can handle the power and will bolt right on.
I have done some more fitment testing on the front and it appears I can fit a 10" wheel up front as long as I get a massive 79mm offset like the C6 vettes have in the rear. Since I've been considering going that wide in the front I have been contemplating ideas on how to get a 12" wheel in the back. I read this thread and got some ideas. https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4161
I bought some of these from Summit. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=CEE%2D3034&N=700+400079+4294925130+4294839049+4294848947+115&autoview=sku I am going to place this frame rail just inside the stock one and then remove the area of the stock rail that would interfere with the tire. I should have some pics of this in the next week or two. I hate welding upside down so I have been contemplating making a rotisserie.

I don't mean to sound negative but have you checked to see if you can even turn thr wheels with the fenders on??
the reason i ask is we are doing the same thin right now and it looks like we will have to narrow the crossmember up to 3" and then have an extremily hi offset rim. we are using 19" fronts ,just something to consider before you get too far along

No worries man, I am the king of pessimism. :lmao:
I have laid the fenders in place to get an idea but it is really hard to tell because I don't have the proper offset wheels yet. The Vette wheels in the picture have a 35mm offset and are roughly 4.5"-5" from the mounting point to the outside edge of the tire. The 79mm Vette wheels are under 2" from mounting point to the edge of the wheel. I am guessing that I will have the same fender well clearance as the Wayne Due clip had. Didn't Wayne use the stock track width of the 85?

Man I just found this thread. That really turned out sweet!!! I am searching for ideas for my corvair
and I never thought of something that simple. I think that I will start looking for a front end to grapht in..
maybe a strut suspension would be cool! Anyways as for the transmission to the ecotec I would start contacting
companies about making an adapter. I think I am going with an ecotec as well but I will run a mendeola transaxle.
BTW, KEEP THOSE PHOTOS COMING:cool:
slow4dr

If I go ecotec I will end up using the factory Solstice/Sky 5spd tranny. I found out there are companies out there using the stock 5 speed behind modified LS2's so I think I should be ok with it.
Here are some recent pics of the rearend coming together.

Was the Novette cool or what?! About the only thing that I would have done differently would be to have rechromed the chrome instead of plating it black.
I LOVED the tube grille that was installed on Novette. The bumpers were REALLY cool too!!!

Looks cool man my hats off to you.
You keep saying you are thinking of running the ecotec engine. Will a 4 banger meet your needs?
Id consider a 4.3 turbo motor.. Syclone Typhoon sites can get you on track for a good 4.3 turbo build.

Since I started this thread last year I have changed my mind on many things including what direction the build would go. My goal now is to keep the car under 2500 lbs with me in it so my power needs have changed. I am most likely going to either go N/A LS1 or turbo ecotec and set my goal around 300-350WHP for the time being. I am planning on starting a family soon so I'd like to get the car running before that happens.
FYI: I had to narrow the front end because of the wheels I ended up with. The offset wasn't what I wanted but I couldn't ignore the great price I got them for so I jumped on the deal. I haven't been able to spend much time on the car lately due to some deaths in the family. All bad news aside I should have quite a few things done by summer.
Some pics of the narrowing process unfinished.

Here is the car prior to setting the ride height. It is up about .5" in the front and down about 1" in the back at present time and has about 4.5-5" of clearance at the front crossmember.

I don't have an engine yet but I have come to the realization that if I go LSx I will have to move the firewall. From memory I have about 25" from the firewall to the rack and a bare LSx block is 20"-21". Figure in the pulleys and the clearance needed at the back of the block and it may have to be moved back as far as 4"-5".
I am also looking at a 60 degree V6 from the mid 90's Camaro's. This block is about 16"-17" front to back and takes to boost very well. These engines come with iron heads but the aluminum heads are a dime a dozen and are a direct swap. The two engines are about 70-80# difference so even after turbocharging the V6 will still be lighter.

You're right they aren't! I just prefer Woodward racks over them that's all!!
I just think that Woodwards reputation precedes Sweets but I don't think that Sweet has a bad product at all. If I wasn't going to use the Woodward rack then Sweet would be my second choice!

troutdog, Are you a member at Steve's Nova Site? Do you have a link to the more pics of the build?
Just read this thread for the first time. Car is looking great. Love the wheels and low stance. Must say that I am sad to see the LS motor go in instead of the Ecotec. I have the Eco in a sandrail. GT35R turbo at 16lbs of boost. Looking for 500-550hp(flywheel) out of it, with the potential for over 600.
Keep up the awesome work!
Phil
Times like right now when I am running out of space quickly I get that thought that I should have went with the smaller engine. I usually set myself straight by clicking on streetfire.net and search for "LS1" and listen to a few run. :firefire:

I agree, the sound of the V8 is a sweet sound. I was thinking of doing up a Nova wagon with a turbo Eco to take on my business sales calls. Low budget and cheap on gas for those 300miles per day..LOL.

I've knocked down 30+ mpg in the SRT4 a few times but I average about 23-25. I am sure the LS1/T56 can do that with equal driving styles.

I won't commit to making the headers until I have the shock mounts figured out. If there is enough clearance I will move the collector down and out towards the wheel. If not I will definitely do like you said and move them above the bars.

I wasn't going to post new pics until I had the headers made but I am to impatient. I changed my mind ONCE AGAIN and will be going with twins now. I traded the T66 for two 60-1's with T3 hot sides. I did a quick moch up, final placement will be similar to where they are now just a little closer to the firewall and a little lower.

I think I would be remaking the front cage bars to gain some room for all the plumbing that will be coming soon.
Thanks for letting me come by to check the car out. gonna be sweet when its driving.

You're welcome Phil,
If I didn't plan on actually tracking this car a LTA cooler would definitely be in the game plan. I think the bars are in the perfect position because I can run the hot side pipes under them with the intake tubes above. I should have some more pieces to the puzzle in the coming weeks so it should be coming together soon.

Well, it's been a long couple weeks since a real update and I haven't got much accomplished but here is where I am at. I mounted the I/C but I still need to make support brackets for the uprights. Each piece that gets placed in the compartment reminds me how cramped it's going to be.
Basic overview, BOV and cold pipe in place.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Running the hot side pipes are going to be interesting. I am planning on running them even with the downbars but just underneath which on the passenger side is no big deal, but I have a P/S pump to contend with on the drivers side.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This view shows how high I have the I/C mounted. The plan here is to split the incoming air in two. I am hoping to have a lower valence/air dam that will direct air under the I/C and onto the radiator. It's kind of hard to picture it without the front end mounted but imagine the very bottom of the current fiberglass even with the bottom of the frame heads. The air dam will extend another 4-5" below that and have it's own shrouding.

I've had some pretty major changes both with the car and some personal things lately so I've sold all the turbo components. The twin turbo set-up will live on through another Nova guy.
Anyway, I've had a little time to start moching up the radiator and intake as well as redo the watts link. I have been shopping around for a C6 Corvette factory take off airbox/bellows/maf etc but I had some leftover 3.5" aluminum tubing so I'm just going to use it instead.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/100_1167-1.jpg
The 9" bars I was using on the watts link didn't allow enough suspension dropout to remove both wheels at the same time so I picked up some 12" bars and remounted it to the rearend.

I haven't picked one up yet but I am leaning towards a Chevette based on some measurements I found on stevesnovasite. I definitely don't have the budget for a custom rack.
I would think grafting a C4/C5 clip to a Camaro would be much easier because of the wider track width.

Where did you get the parts for your three-link? Especially the links/bushings for the front of the arms where they connect to the chassis. Are Those universal bushings and then just a peice og tube bought in the right size and the welded to som threaded tubing? Or are they bought as a kit?

I got them from a local place called "G & J Aircraft". Yes, I just threaded the sleeve to take a right hand thread stud and then welded a sleeve to the outside to reinforce it.

I have installed a few of theese front suspensions and the problem is the stearing rack.you can't use it where it is in the picts or your motor will stick through the hood the spindles are kind of an issue depending on the stance that your looking for as far as i know nobudy makes a dropped spindle for theese but you can cut the stearing arm off and make your own dropped stearing arms.your not out of the woods yet but keep on mocking up.you might be better off fabricating your front crossmember insted of using the stock c4 one.:bsjerk:

John Parsons mentioned the rack clearance issues back on page one(if memory serves me well). I used this as an excuse to help weight distribution and move the engine back 8"-9". Building a custom crossmember was discussed somewhere back in there as well.
Plenty of engine/rack clearance
