Hey Guys :attn:,

Just wandering what a reasonable price would be to get a 9in third member rebuilt. This would include gears, posi, and daytona pinion. I have a guy I work w/ that said he would do it for around $600, and he swears by rebuilding a factory Ford four pin posi unit. He also said he would give me some kind of warrenty. I think he said I would have to get the gears, what brand do you guys recommend.

The car it is going in will be primarily street driven, with the occasional trip to the strip and to an autocross event. It will have a 383 w/ approximately 550hp, a viper t56, truck arm rear suspension, and it is a full floating rearend; if this info makes any difference. I was planning on going w/ 4.10 gears.

Also, what are you guy's opinions on the WAR-A(small bearing) third members. I have heard they are better than the standard, but still not as good as a nodular. Then again I have heard they were made w/ a weaker material than the standard third members were, and they tend to crack easier? What do you guys think? I know a nodular one would be the cats a#$, but I can't afford that.

Lots of ?'s, but thanks in advance,
Joe

Hey, those WAR cases were made in the late 50's. I would go with a case that doesn't have a WAR casting on it. As for the posi, they have a tendency to crack on the left side. Sometimes, the crack will wind itself all the way around and form a circle. After that, the rest of your diff will be toast. Auburn posi's are a safe alternative, even though they are non-rebuildable. They usually last a long time, so the non-rebuilding issues that come with them turn out to be a small complaint for what otherwise is a good unit.

$600 for a rebuild sounds steep to me. I bought a new four pin posi with a billet hat off a dealer on Ebay for $250 to my door. Complete bearing set will set you back $100 and gears about $135. Set up cost should be around $200-250.
I know guys running mid 11's with single rib cases that haven't had any problems.

HOLEY 5H1T Batman is he giving you a reacharound with that? and a generouse amount of lube too I hope

A 9 inch rear Is the EASYEST rear to setup In the world (well allmost)
the going rate is 200 to $250, NO MORE
Tell the guy to lick you where you stink!

Have you checked Mark Williams, Currie, Strange, Looked in the back of a car mag?

Ok, so I will look into setting it up myself. Now, what gears do you recommend? (richmond, randy's, etc...) I know that at work they tend to use Randy's Ring & Pinion, but just want somebody elses opinion. Also, should I go w/ a posi, or a locker? This car will be primarily street driven, w/ occasional trips to the tracks. What brand posi/ locker?

Thanks again,
Joe

Motive gears are good to use. More user friendly setting the pinion depth than say Richmond, at least from my experience that is.
As far as posi, the last one I bought was for a budget car. It was a new four pin with a billet hat that a dealer on Ebay sells regularly. His user ID is completeoffroad or something like that. I gave around $250 for it. The best price I could find.
Good luck.

I don't have many answers for you here. I will tell you my experience with Richmond Gears though. I have had 3 diffs set up with them by 2 different people, and all 3 have made noise. Have had no problems with the gears other than I don't want to hear them. I have heard many similar stories about Richmond. Maybe it is all crap...dunno. I have heard many good things about U.S. Gear, that is what I will be using on my next one. BTW, I would not pay $600 for a rebuild.

From the response on here, I am not going to pay that much.
