View Full Version : AFX spindles and GW A-arms. Grind bumpsops off?

My front suspension has AFX tall spindles, GW upper and lowers, and QA1s. I have crap for turning radius. My tires don't even come close to the tire-clearance notches I cut into the frame rails to get full lock with the old suspension.
At a quick glance, it looks like the steering bumpstops are going to have to come completely off. Anyone else run into this?

Is it touching the bump stops? How is the turning radius compared to stock? How wide are your tires?

I think you mean steering stops.......
As of yet, I am not aware of this. You are the first to mention this issue......
What is you wheel width, wheel offset and tire size ?? Did you switch from a drum front brake set-up or was it a factory disc chassis ??

Yeah, I meant steering bump stops....it was late last night :)
I'm running 18x8.5s with a 265/35/18 and 5.5 BS.
It is a factory SS disc chassis. I'll post up some pics later.

There is your problem. It has nothing to do with the control arms or spindle. I bet your outer tie rod is real close to the rim as well. You will need to put a spacer to push the rim out a little.

No, the steering bump stops are what is limiting the movement. The rims come close to the tie rods, but don't touch. About 1/4 inch clearance.

Try putting the stock lowers back on and see if the problem is still there.

How wide is the wheel again? I missed it. All I see is 18 x .5 there. The backspace will be the issue. Last I heard the MOST you could get on there without any issues was 4.75"-5" backspace on a first gen. The 5.5" backspace is most likely the issue here.

I had GW uppers and lowers put onto my 69. I also have the ATS spindles and the turning radius is very bad. It is a PITA just manuvering around a bit. Much worse than the rack that was previously on the car.
Whistler, did you find the remedy?

This isn't reassuring my decision to buy the spindles...

MattThe spindles don't have the steering stops, the LCAs do. GW stops protrude more than stock so that those with wider front wheels/tires don't rub the frame.
Speedtech LCAs have adjustable stops on them.

Oh, well I'm going to be using the stock lowers anyway. No worries, then. :)

69w/a 69 is right. I will have the stops ground off the lower arms and see what happens.
IMO, the AFX spindle is the only way to go and has no contributing factor in a bad turning radius.

Sorry, I haven't been here in a while. Yes, I just ground down the stops until I got the radius I wanted. I also notched the frame in the back of the control arm to allow a full lock with an 18x8.5 with 5.5 BS
