Whta's your set-up? I wouldn't put the on anything smaller than 396.they will make killer hp on the top of 396 plus cube motor.

I don't have an answer for you, but you can go through some of the stories and tests in this link. You may find a setup similar to yours.

The 220's are a tad on the big side, but not obscene for this motor.
BUT
The 220's create absolute nightmere's in the valvetrain. Just plan on dropping another $1000 for dedicated shaft rockers and custom length pushrods

The AFR 220's use stock valvetrain parts and create no problems.
The AFR 227's that I have use the offset T&D shaft rockers that runns about a grand.

He does not want to build a 7800RPM motor, and 220s won't wake up unless you plan to turn the snot out of them. And 383s are not exactly RPM motors.

And with no torque he will get his ass kicked by a stock civic at a stoplight.

If I get my A** kicked by a civic at a stop light I will get out shoot the car and then myself on the spot. There will be no A** kicking by no civics going on here!!

I called AFR today to ask them what they thought and well they agreed that a 220 cc head was on the big side for a 383. I talked with a guy named Tony and after I sent him a Dyno sheet he seems to think that I have a valve float problem. Although I have never heard anything and the motor seems to like the R's.

So... did you just copy and paste that from the AFR website or have you ever actually played with these?
I have

Like my post says I have the 227's with T&D offset shaft rockers.
I have not "played" with the 220's but spoke to AFR and what I was told the 220's have stock geometry.
I was also told by AFR that the 227's could be used with stock type rockers but not recomended.

The 220's would make a killer FI setup. Got a friend running a 406 w/220's and a F1 running 8.90's ina 3rd gen.

You called Tony, after I already told you? That's it, just wait till you see your bill now!

Seriously, with your set up, compression, cam, etc, they are to much. Now a 406, with a little more bore and size in general would do a better job of gobbling up all that air.

I think I told you when we first started talking about your motor I was NOT a big hydraulic roller fan, and that we should put some solid rollers on it. You can change just lifters, but I would put a mid 240s shaft in it also.

Frank you are right on the money with exactly what tony told me. He said that I should ditch the Hydro roller valve train and go with a custom solid in the 240* range. Then he tried to sell me a AFR's newest head that is not quite on the market yet. He said that they are flowing 300 cfm for the 195 street head and that he would give me a discount and use me for "R & D" THe newest heads will be in the next isssue of engine masters and I could pick them up for $1200. ALso he told me that I should be running a small single plain, which I seem to remember this fella down in apopka telling me the same thing. GO figure !

300 CFM will support 600HP. Funny, I was on the phone with Tony yesterday also. Seems a nice pair of AFRs may be on the way for a certain black and red car.

no fair I want them first.. if I could have 600 hp N/A with a 383 ci that I could cruise around town with and then run the snot out of it at the track.... I am all over it!!! Frank, Tony told me that I should be running 11.25-1 on pump 93 does that sound right????

Check out p.114 of the Sept. '06 Hot Rod magazine. It features a Joe Sherman-built 383 with 220cc Pro Action heads, 11:1 compression, Super Victor, and a 260/268 @ .050 106LS flat tappet. It made 529hp at 6,300rpm with 1 3/4" headers. Not everyone's cup of tea, but interesting nonetheless.
