Hi im am just wondering at what hp do u think its worth spending the extra 1k on a 454 world or dart block ect. I am trying to find ways to save myself some money building a chevelle. Also how much does it useually cost to have a older block serviced at a shop.

Depends if you have a good block to start from or not. Most people don't so getting a new fresh block with no problems or cracks is a great idea, plus it gives you the ability to put more cubes in it.

You might want to go pick up the new Chevy High Performance, they do a breakdown of a cheap BBC rebuild to give you the low end of the scale. Pop Hot Rodding is doing a Vizard article this month and next month on a economical performance build. Both of those articles will give you some ideas.

I agree with strokerace,if you start with a good block then 700-800hp,isn't out the question,If you choice a aftermarket block I recommend a Dart or a GM bow-tie block,The world blocks aren't that good of quailty.IMO

Yea everyone i talk to says that world products are not very good. The thing is im in the planning stages of building a 70 Chevelle. I am only 25 so i don't have the doe or the knowledge that some of the older folks do to go all out. On the other hand u have to learn sometime and its a passion of mine. I know quite a bit more about newer camaros ta's ect. This will be my 1st classic build. With buying the car, body work, paint, interior, Suspension, Wheels, Brakes, and engine im already around 50k for what i want to do. Then they say whatever u plan to spend double it and thats what the cost. Needless to say i don't want to cut corners but i think i will have no choice to do so in some areas but i can't bring myself to drop crate 454 or 502 in there after hearing guys saying there building 600hp 496 engines for less than 7k.

you can get 600 hp by accident with any big block 396 to 454 it dont matter.
Go get a used truck 454 and use the entire lower assy
Rebuild it and buy new edelbrock or afr oval port heads
get a decent hyd roller and your set
The stock 2 bolt truck eng will take 600 + hp for years
cast crank 2 bolt block and truck rods are all that u need
