Well, she ran, badly for a few minutes this weekend! on three cylinders.
a quick comression checked reveald 3 of 6 of the barrels were 0-25 psi. The other three were 125. So. Anyone know anyone with a corvair motor laying around? Lol.
We're trying the ol' tranny fluid down the sparkplug thing next but i doubt it seriously. she was garaged for 12 years and all, and nothing "sounds" broken.
we'll see... Seriously, If anyone can help with a motor. (and no, a V8 or V6 conversion is out of the question.) I'd be real thankful.

That sucks, even when you do expect it. Are you thinking stuck rings?
As for another engine, the only thing I can suggest would be Su - ba - roo :lmao: , although I'm not at all certain that it would work.

use a ss cobalt engine or srt-4 engine that would be cool

I agree with above. A Turbo Solstice GT motor would be cool. Or even a Colorado straight 5cyl.:3gears:

why do you guys hate me? I gotta put a 'vair engine back in it for now. Perhaps later, a conversion. Im hoping for stuck rings. Hoping hoping hoping. If it isnt stuck rings its broken valves, or stuck ones. one cylinder has NO compression. the needle didnt even move. It had so little horsepower, it got stuck climbing a gopher mound. !
The reason for the stock engine is ease. It'll be faster and cheaper to get going (im shooting for hot august nights) So, i've got less than a month to get a car that hasnt run in 12 years road worthy. No pressure.

Found a guy with a 65 vair, with complete modified 140 engine. thing is, the car it's in is a wreck, with no brakes and hasn't been registered in several years. He's gonna sell me the car and I'll get a new steering wheel, a much cooler engine, a set of champ 500s and lots of other goodies for a few hundered more bucks.

Damn you found a motor, we have an older (86?) Turbo Porch e flat laying around. Stick that back there! but never mind, go mainstream if you must. LOL

really?
that would be interesting. I'm gonna have to look into a corvair/porsche engine swap. I've always wondered about that.

That would surely wake it up.....:seizure:
Of course, then it would have to be called the Porsvair.

I like Corsche better. It'd be a huge mountain of work but i bet it would be worth it. Mmmmm... Turbo porsche power. the sacrelige of it all.
whats a turbo porsche put out? 230hp?

go german!!!!
I would recommend the Subie motor as well. My dad ran a Corvair engine for over 20 years in his dune buggy, and then switched to a Subaru XT-6 engine. You will have to find a place for the radiator, but is should be worth it. The little Subaru engines make good power and are probably lighter than the Porsche engine. For a while my dad was going to swap in a Porsche 911 engine, but decided it was too heavy. I remember picking up the heads (he actually had the engine, but it had tossed a rod) and they were very heavy with the overhead cams and all the associated chains and tensioners. Subaru engines are much easier to come by as well. You can contact Kennedy Engineering for the trans adaptor.

Ever hear a WRX with a good exhaust? That boxer is the coolest little motor ever!

Porsche?
The Rex engine sounds like a good plan too. Should be a good number of formerly fast-n-furious Subie's in Nor-Cal wrecking yards.

You could call it a Corerra?

what would really be cool is using throttle bodys (where a webber 2bbl would normally go) and weld some injector bungs into the manifolds. Then I could run a current technology turbo/intercooler with a blowoff valve. Noone that I know of has done this yet. There have been a few "blow through" turbo setups done, and they put out impressive numbers. But noone has made the quantum leap forward with the corvair motor yet.
I want to be "that guy" that did it, and made it work. Thats always been my goal, even with the original provair (which is slated to use all WRX stuff.) I'd like to go further, see how far one can go with that motor. There are 400+ hp corvair motors out there in dune buggys.
project Quantum Leap has a nice ring to it though.

So, after much searching, I found a donor motor for the vair.
I spent last night in the hospital fighting a heart that wanted to explode out of my chest, (I'll live, they tell me.) But I got up and drove 4.5 hours to get this.

this car has everything I need. 4 carbs, carb rotator kit, super coil, crane electronic ignition, electronic fuel pump, headers, cam, the crown suspension upgrades (a cradle that ties the rear together better) and a host of other goodies seen there. Most of the upgrades are brand new. the guy had no idea what he was selling and sold it to me for 700 bucks! Just the extras are worth more. Now to get to work....

No kidding. Time to get to work. I'll have it all ripped apart and back together next weekend I hope. The engine is a real screamer, even though it looks like crap. I cant wait to disassemble everything and clean/paint it. Going with black crinkle paint and silver on the dress up parts and pulleys.
Should be a fun week.

you ever fall ass backward into good fortune? you know, like those guys who find a monet in the attic? After tearing into my vair I've found that:
1. It's got a lumpy Isky cam.
2. The ICM is a crane XR700 optical pickup model.
3. The carbs have been rotated to deal with fuel flooding issues by a pro.
4. Said carbs have all been worked, the "stainless kit" everyone telling me to get is already there.
5. its got a low oil pressure shut down already installed.
6. all four carbs are primarys giving me an idle screw at each corner for adjustiblity.
7. The linkage has been setup to make the second set progressive.
The more I dig, the more I find. It's like a dream come true. Every part I could think of to install on a carb'd motor is already there. I'm STOKED.

Sorry to hear the bad news about the OEM motor. But isn't that why we're all here? Good luck getting it over to HAN.
btw, I know a "ricer" guy with a WRX too. It's a cool little car. Do the Subie!

Well further investigation found that i had a head gasket broken. So I tore it down and fixed it. Which was cool, because i've found all kinds of neat stuff about my engine, like it's been bored .60 over. Its got oversized valvesprings, and ported heads. (They actually cut the risers off the intakes and ported, then welded the risers back on!)
This gave us time to work out other stuff too.
some pics.
