Staggered wheel combo 67 Mustang

Hello all,
I'm still unsure of the which wheels I'm going to get for my car... I was first thinking 17" torque thrusts, then 17" billet magnums, then 17" foose now I'm leaning towards Boyd Coddington Junkyard Dogs. 17x8 for the front and 18x9 for the back... Are there any problems that I can expect with running a staggered setup like this? From research and measuring, its seems as tho 9" wide wheels for the back would be perfect for my car. I guess every car is different and while some guys are running 9.5's I think they would be a little tight on mine. I don't really want to use the BFH to make them fit..

I wanted to run 235/45zr17 for the front and 275/35 or 40 18's for the back..

So having said that there anyone running a staggered combo for wheels? What are your thoughts? Am I crazy??

You have a lot of guys on this forum running staggered set up's on their cars. I'm running 17x7's on the front and 17x9.5's on the rear of my 67. You almost have to run a staggered set up on the Mustang just to get that extra bit of rubber on the rear. It stinks when a 9.5" rim is tight. Good luck with your project.

Do you want the overall diameter of the tires to be close, or larger by roughly an inch on the rear? That would make your decision between a 35 or 40 series tire for the rear.

I think If I could manage to fit 18x9's on the back I'd run 275/35/18's... but I'll have to measure. I'm getting the car from the exhaust shop today and have since borrowed a 275/40/17 to mock up to see if I can even fit that.. I'm thinking the dimensions of a 275/35/18 would be quite close?? If that fits then I'll see if I can run 18's. I can get them in 18x9 just not 17x9. If I went with the 18's I think it would give a better look and would also save me on narrowing them. If I went with the 17's I would have to get them narrowed..

Tom, I have 18 x 9 on the rear of my 68 Cougar, but with 245/45/18 rubber. With 275/35/18, which would be about an inch shorter, as well as the larger fender opening of the Mustang, you should be fine. If you get around 5-3/4" rear spacing, it should be very close to perfect.

Just measured with a mock up tire and it looks like an 18x9 wheel with about 5.5" backspacing would be just about perfect... The only thing is I plan to run baer brakes in the back which they inform me will stick out .180" further than stock... so If I order them with 5.75" it should be right..... I'll most likely run 275/35/18's

I dont think a 8" wheel on the front is going to work without some rubbing!

16 x 8" will be close, 17 x 8" or 18 x 8" will fit. With the larger diameters, there is more clearance to the upper control arm / ball joint on the classic Fords. The 7.5" wheels are close on the inside on my 68 Cougar, but they are tucked under the fenders too.

I have a Comet witch is the same a a Maverick. Same Mustang suspension. I have 17x8 with 4.5 backspacing with 225/45's. They fit but is close to the outter fender since I lowered the car about 2.5 of 3 inches. I'm running 18x10's with 295/35's but my car has been mini tub. I thimk a 9 was the most I could do at first. Now I have enough room for an 11 easy.

here is my 67 fastback as you can see the front is way to high but is like that cause it has a 17x8 on front and guy i got it from said it rubbed the wheels well so he put large stiff ass springs on it..not sure what im gonna do now ..prolly new wheels..:pat:
