I am seriously planning on buying a gear vendors unit for my car and I was wondering if anyone here has any real world expierence with them? I have a turbo 350 with a 3.55 gear. The sales man told me that because of the gear split and torque multiplication that people typically see a .5 sec quicker ET in the quarter. I was just wondering how much of this was BS and how much was true. I like the idea of an overdrive and the fact that I could run 4.11s and still turn a much lower RPM at cruise speeds. I also like the idea that I do not have to change the cross member for an overdrive. I also like the idea that it is a very basic bolt in and the unit is just about bullet proof. (rated for 1200 hp) I will shread the th 350 long before the GV unit. and th 350's are easy and cheap to rebuild. Also at $2300 the unit price is more bang for the buck then the t-56 swap or a 700-r or 200-r where there will be a need for a lock up converter.

I have one on my 69 behind a th350 and a stout 406. I will give you some feedback.
I went from 3.73 gears to 3.42's to get less rpm to trip with. Because the od factor in the gv is only .78. I have given up about 4-5 tenths at the dragstrip to do so, and in hind sight I will probably never drive the car enough to reap the fuel benefits, so I've decided that was a mistake. To me that is the only downside to the gv, is that it does'nt quite provide enough od for long distance trips, with an aggressive low rear gear. If all you are going to do is cruise around town, and want a 3.73-4.10 gear then I don't think it can be beat!!
It does seem indestructible. The shifts are pretty seemless, and I'm not sure it robs much hp at all. I do not think you gain much at the dragstrip, in fact I see a little slower times, but at the road course it I really like it. Hope this helps.

So, with the 3.73's and the GV what rpm's were you turning at say 70-80 mph?

As it's a 22% overdrive,if you're spinning 3,000rpm at 60mph with the GV off,you would be spinning approximately 2,400rpm with it engaged.
I like the GV units alot but wish they were offered in a taller OD ratio. Just for an example,6th gear in my T56 is .50, a 50% overdriven ratio.
FWIW,you can find new GV units on eBay often for around $1800 or less.
