Was thinking about fabbing up some rear lower control arms on my bro's 69 chevelle, I'd planned on using 2x3 square tubing and notch the end for a piece of pipe, make the size of the pipe the size of bushing and get it pressed in

Yup, thats how they do it. I wouldnt use it cause i hate poly or rubber bushings.

Your round tubing will have to be a much thicker wall than you need to end up with, because when you weld it to the rectangular tube, it's going to be out of round, probably in a big way. You'll have to bore it to your finish diameter after you've welded it.

I'm with TurboLark though, figure out a way to use good rod ends!!

How about just buying a pair of 22" panhard rods from Coleman (http://www.colemanracing.com/section/index.htp?id=574) for 67.25/ea then you have plenty strong arms with rod ends at both ends.
