Need opinions on what to get

Now that my 05 chevy has been ripped off, I am wanting to possibly get a diesel. I was not too pleased with the power and mileage of the 6.0 gas. Also, I was not too excited that I could not get a bigger tire and wheel under it without lifting it.
Sooo, that being said, what are the pro's and con's of the GM Ford and Dodge diesel trucks? From all standpoints, ride, mileage, size, problems, power potental (going to chip it!), and so on....? I know that this is almost as bad as discussing your favorite color and who is right, but I want to know what the ups and downs of them all are.
I drove my bro-in-laws 06 250 ford D and it rode tons better than my 05 Chevy, I was very surprised to say the least!
I want a 4x4, crew cab HD 3/4 ton. I will pull and load it on occasion for work (and cars!), but prolly mostly just drive it.

My buddy has a Ford 350 dually with a Banks kit on it. It has a chip, intake and a full turbo back exhaust. Let me tell ya, for something of this size, it hauls!!!!! I borrow it to tow my chevelle from place to place, you wouldn't even know it was back there!

I am a die Hard Chevy guy anymore and after riding in my friends diesel trucks I do not know how they can ride better w/o sacrificing somewhere else. As for power, once they are chipped they all run about the same. The chips with the selectable levels work well for maximizing either power or mileage depending on setting.

My 06 Duramax is a bad puppy. With a Super Chips program it is nearly 500HP, goobs of torque, quiet enough to fool passengers into thinking it is a gas job, and 15.8MPG around town playing often, 19MPG to 20MPG at 80MPH on the interstate, and 13MPG loaded pulling a closed trailer at 80MPH. And it will out run most of what I pull up beside. I have not had it to the track, but it covered Lisa's stock low 13 second WS6 to 1000 feet, so I assume it runs 14.0s or so. It's fun, me likes it!

I have a 04 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab with the 5.9 diesel with the edge juice and attitude controller. There is not a Chevy or Ford diesel that is mildly modded that will come close to performing like the Dodge! That is coming from a life-long chevy owner. I did my research, drove all the trucks and did a lot of reading on turbodieselregister.com and dieselresource.com. I average 19 mpg which is a mix of highway and town driving. Admittedly, the Chevy automatic transmission is superior to the Dodge up until 06, and the Ford seats are more comfortable but I made my decision that was based more on performance and reliability. You will find a lot of differing opinions on this so make your own decision. As far as the tire sizes are concerned, I know people that are running 305's on the Dodge w/o lifts. I just went up to 285's mainly because I did not want to sacrifice too much mpg's and also keeping a tire with an E load rating is critical with these nose heavy beasts if you don't want to feel like you are going to push off the road in every corner you go into. BTW, I'd always rather be cummin than strokin!!!:bsjerk:

I just bought a Ford diesel.
The Duramax with the allison 6spd I drove had the electronic shift (like a shrifter) on the column and was a rocket ship.
I'd bought the Chevy but I have to be able to have a passenger in the middle of the front, and the seat is kinda small compared to the Super Duty.

Well guys, thanks for the info! I want to make a good decision since I will prolly be driving it for a few years (unless it gets ripped!). I think that the biggest tire I can get on a Chevy is around a 285/75, but I could be wrong. I put a set of 295's on a 18x10 rim and it would not turn in the front. The stockers look like pizza cutters to me! So, I am torn in all ways! I know that they will all be comparable in performance, but the other stuff is what I am concerned about.

I know that the F350s come with 34's and 20" wheels if you select the package, so you should be able to get atleast 34s on the Ford. I agree with you on the Chevy pizza cutter comment, the stock tires are wayy too small and leave little room for upgrades. I was able to fit 33s (305s) on my '96 Tahoe and that's not possible on a new HD Chevy, what's up with that?

I live in farming country and the majority of the work trucks around here are Dodge or Ford diesels,,very few Duramax's.

I'd buy a new Dodge w/Cummings if I were in the market.

dont get me wrong that banks doesnt make a good product but i can tell you there is nothing like a 6500lb crewcab duramax running 12.6 seconds in the 1/4 mi with only plug n play chips and full exhaust!

I have an 04 dmax dually drive it all the time and havent had any trouble and it's held up. Rides really well but nothing like my mom's escalade.

My family has had all three within the last 4 years and my fathers newest company truck is a dodge cummins mega cab. the thing is by far the best truck we have had so far. They are used in the logging industry and Dodge was always lacking int he back seat dept. to haul 5 rather large log truck drivers into the bush.

The 04 chev duramax we have sucks! the engine is not bad but the rest of the truck is falling apart around it and was almost lemon law status in early 05.

I like the Fords but the new 6.0 scares me and I have not read good things on reliabilty.

You cannot beat a 6 cyl cummins for reliability!

My 04 Duramax has the banks six shooter on it. It also has 70k miles on it. I would not trade it for any other truck I have ever driven. Great power, mileage and hauls my 26' trailer loaded with ease.

I can get the Ford "X" plan (whatever that is) thru one of my suppliers on all new trucks. Is that worth it? Good discount or a ploy to just buy a truck with a slight discount? Anyone know?

I have heard mixed feelings. Supposidly better than the first few years the Duramax was made. Just not too fond of the rest of the truck. Rides kinda rough and can't put bigger tires and wheels without a lift.
Anyone know of the problems with a 6.0 powerstroke?
Also, can I chip a new diesel and keep the warranty? Thoughts?

the new duramax smokes every other diesel in its class in EVERY catagory.... its the hot rod of diesels right now. the cummins is also a good engine... how ever the cummins is alittle more utilitarian.. not as smooth, likes to work just a bit harder then the duramax.
and as far as power strokes go... the joke around here is id rather be CUMMINs then powerSTROKEN' the power stroke isnt as durable as any of the other engines. and if any one doubts that do a side by side comparesen of a cummins conecting rod and a powerstroke rod. as well as many of the other parts.

if it were me id wait for the cummins engine to come in the ford trucks (the word on the streets is this will happen soon) OR id get a duramax... both would be bad ass

Mine is an 04, so I am sure I would have sticker shock if I went to a car lot today. The sticker on mine was $46K then. Seems, if memory serves me right, I got it for $41K?

Did you say what weight truck you are looking at? 1/2, 3/4, 1ton etc?

Keep in mind that the Chevy's have Independant front suspension vs. Ford's straight axle. IMO the chevy rides nicer stock, however if you want to go fitting big tires or lifting it one day the Ford is far easier and cheaper to do it due to the straight axle.

I've been looking at the 2500hd gmc's. I'm not worried about lifting or anything like that. (mainly just need to get out of the jeep! :hammer:)
I've been getting prices and stuff over the weekend and so far their first price to me has been 37.9k. I was mainly trying to get an idea of what others have been paying for them as I hadn't really bought a diesel before.
The two I rode in already were really nice. One was a crew cab (too big for what I need) and one was the extended cab which is what i'm looking for. The thing that really surprized me was the power! Those things move!

Well, I went and drove several trucks last weekend and ended up buying a Ford. The basis of my decision was that it was a used '06 King Ranch (which is by far too nice for me!) with only 4,900miles!:smoke: I guess the guy traded it in for a cab and chassis that he could put a flatbed on since it was too nice to work out of. That dude went away from the dealership bleeding I would say!:help: It stickered for $51,800!!! I ended up getting it for $34,500!:1st:
If I had to buy a new one, I would have ended up getting a Chevy after driving it. The new one is a friggin' powerhouse stock! The prices were all about the same with the Dodge being the cheapest that I could find, but not by much. The "tittied" out Chevy was around $49,000, the Ford King Ranch was $51,000 and the Dodge mega cab was about $49,000 all in leather 4x4 3/4 ton auto's at "sticker".
The best IMO was:
Interior space: Dodge by far, Chevy and then Ford
Power: Chevy by far, Dodge and then Ford
Seats: Ford King Ranch (only), Chevy, Ford and then Dodge with the church pews
Drive: Ford, Chevy and then Dodge

Nice truck. I hadn't looked at any fords myself.
I'ma try and get the one i want for around 34.. Supposedly theres suppose to be some kind of "sale" or something coming out the 18th. I might wait and talk to some more people to see whats going to happen. I do like the truck they have!
