View Full Version : Which seats for a 69 camaro?

I currently have a set of 98 camaro seats covered in the black/white houndstooth material, and I have installed some seat heaters for the cold days.

I find them adequate for driving around town, but woefully inadequate for anything over a 1 hour trip (bad back) and certainly not up to the task for sliding around on track day.

What's out there that can be covered in the houdstooth, support to keep you in place and will be comfy for hours at a time, with the ability to recline? Thx for any info.

Kinda pricey but the dream seat for me is Recaro Style seats (http://www.speedwaremotorsports.com/seat/recaroStyleTopline.asp) with the upgrade ventalation and 8 way power. I sat in these at a car show and was hooked. Leather on the sides but not in the the contact zones so there's no slipping in the corners.

Really??? Your back is either alot worse than mine (6 blown discs in lower back), or those seats are shot. I drove my '02 SS from NY to FL and then did the power tour back. And while anything over 6 hrs of driving started to get uncomfortable, it was not that bad.

I agree with Texas Bob, but if $$ is an issue I have had a couple of sets of Corbeaus, TRS and Legacy, that were pretty good and about half the price of the Recaros.

The Legacy is by far more comfortable than the TRS model I currently have now. The issue with Corbeaus is the design of the seat height and mounting bracket puts you pretty close the headliner and I am only 5'10". Granted you can slide/recline the seat, but personally it is not the most comfortable driving position for me. I wil either be upgrading to Recaros or redesigning the seat bracket to lower the seat.

I just got Corbeau seats for my car. For the passanger I got a TRS. It's a nice seat, but for the bigger/older guys I'd probly opt for a wide version to give a little more room.

Here's some pics of the all leather Recaro style toplines in my '68. Most comfortable seat I've sat in. Everything is adjustable to get you in the right driving position. BTW, sorry about the pic quality

Andy is that ventalation system all that it's cracked up to be? Boy those are some nice seats!

Not trying to hijack this thread, but are you using stock seat belts? If so, do they clear the mounting brackets w/o modding them unlike the Corbeaus??

I have no idea at this point. I only got to drive the car a few times after installing the seats before some jackass decided to stop in the middle of the road and back into me. This was around christmas time, and I was using the heaters on my drives. They did work well. I was told the ventilation doesn't really work on the full leather versions. The leather isn't perforated (sp?) so it can't breathe like cloth does. I don't know why Recaro didn't put little vent holes in the center sections. If you want them to do their job, I suggest you get the cloth/leather combination. I scored a really good deal on my seats, and all-leather was my only option at that price. A full cloth seat would have cost me more, and I really like leather anyways.

Go test drive a newer BMW 745i or 750i at a dealership if you can. Many of them have ventilated seats, and they work very well. You can feel a nice cooling effect, and are great on warm days. I think Recaro makes the seats for BMW.

I'm in the middle of an LS1/T56/Wayne Due C4/ minitub/ new paint project on my car, so I won't get a chance to test out the seats again for a while :crying:

Rod,
I still have the stock belts in the car for now. I removed the plastic retractor guides when I had the Corbeaus (that are now in your car). So I'm not sure if they would have worked without modification. I will be buying a set of retractable 3-point belts before the car is back on the road, so I will be crossing that bridge when I get there.

You've been telling me how much you like my seats even before I sold you the Corbeaus. You thinking about getting a set?

Which retractable are you going with?

I am seriously considering it! If I do this will be the fourth set of seats I have had in my car in two years. I may PM you later with some additional questions.

I've had some corbeaus in my 67 before putting in some all aluminum racing seats, and they were ok for a few hours, but has been mentioned, the head room was tight, and I had to swap the passenger and drivers seats to use the stock seatbelts (as are the 98 camaro seats now in the car).

These are my second set of seats in the 69, and I would only want to do a seat swap one more time. Between the seats and the houndstooth upholstery, it gets expensive (see for sale section for houndstooth 69 seats).

I had an 05 SSR for awhile that I thought the seats were really comfortable in, but after an hour or so the butt section put my legs to sleep, so maybe the 98 camaro seats are ok, and it's just my back/butt that have issues?

I would like to hear more feedback on you guys that are still doing some swapping. Perforated leather for ventilation would work wonders for me, for sure!

I guess it really comes down to what you want to spend. I am a true believer that you get what you pay for when it comes to seats.

Are you set on having houndstooth inserts on the seats? If you are, you are going to have some extra expenses in getting whatever seats you buy re-covered.

I think the ventilation system will work great if you get houndstooth material installed in the center sections. If it gets hot where you live you will appreciate it.

Dan,

We have done hounstooth inserts on our seats and offer heaters. We have adjustable lumbar support as well. The seats do have tall bottom bolsters so would be completely different to sit in and get in and out of than stock seats. Email me through the contact link on the site if you have any questions.

Mark, how much taller are your seat backs compared to stock 68/89 Camaro seats? I will be in the market for some over the winter and also want the houndstooth but are concerned about the back height. Too tall looks funny IMO.

Sorry to hijack the thread.
