I am considering installing the Edlebrock matching cam shaft kit for the Carb (#1405) and intake (performer). I have in my 1968 Camaro

Can this be done with the engine in the car? I realize the rad., etc would have to come out. But would the support that the horns are attached to be in the way?

I am hoping this would improve the performance over the reground cam that is in the engine. It is a 8.5 to 1, .030 over reman 350 from Autozone, I was told. Stock converter and th350 trans.

Any insight is appreciated.

I have done a few cam swaps in my 69 without problems, unsure of interference issues with a 68.

Even if it gets in the way, all you would have to do is remove one engine mount bolt and jack up that side of the engine.

As already said, you will need to remove the radiator. The hood latch support will also need to come out, but is not difficult to do. If you have A/C, the condenser will also need to be removed.

The A/C condenser will need to be unbolted but the hoses can be left attached. Swivel it out of the way to R&R the camshaft.

You can do it with engine in car... but it is a PITA to re-seal the oilpan

BTW - that is a really poor camshaft, you probably won't be happy with the performance.
I would look at something with ~215/225@050 with a 112LS for that motor.

Thanks for all the replies. I did not want to try to get into pulling the engine.

I have no idea what cam to pick. Thanks for the cam spec recommendations. Just thought that might be one to use. I am looking to get the best I can with this engine.

Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!
JEFF

I was looking at a Summit catalog, I do not know what 112LS refers to? Is it Lobe Seperation?

Are the Summit Racing Cam kits any good or should I try to stick to a name brand?

Thanks,

Summit Brand = name brand factory 2nds. Summit racing does not manufacture any products. In general I would stay away.
LS means Lobe Seperation, so you are correct.

My reccomendation will be the Isky 264/270 Mega Cam (http://www.iskycams.com/timingchart.php?product_number=201264271-12)
Its a good solid dual pattern hyd cam that will work well with your low compression and stocker valvesprings. You should have a powerband from ~1000RPM-6000RPM with peak power ~5500RPM

part # CL-201264271-12 (http://www.iskycams.com/productdisplay.php?productnumber=CL-201264/271-12&sku=4825&hdwt=31101&loc=101&dealer=no) will get you that cam with a set of matching lifters.

If you are dropping the oil pan and dont want to pull the engine, get a 1 piece oil pan gasket. We just recently changed the cam phase in my 68 twice, and the one piece gasket makes it a CINCH to put back together. Took about 90 minutes each time. The balancer remove/re-install is the slow part...

Thanks for the advice. I will go with the 1 piece pan gasket. Also, I think I will try the Isky 264/270 mega cam. I certainly want the best of both world for a mild performace engine.

So I finally got around to calling Summit and Jeg's Tech Lines to assist with my order. Summit thought the 264/270 mega might be too much since my compression is only 8.5 to 1.

Below is a summary of what has been suggest to me from members and Summmit/Jegs. I have 2.73 gears, going to 3.23/3.55 w/in a year, stock converter (maybe putting in slightly higher stall at some point - 2k) and TH-350 with mild shift kit. Car is used just for cruising and spirited driving at this point. So I would think the upper end is not as important.

What do you guys think?

All comments appreciated. Thanks.

I stand by my reccomendation...
They comp cam they reccomended has more duration and less LS so would be worse for your low compression engine (by their logic) than my original reccomendation of 214/221@050 112LS

The Summit guy is just trying to sell you what he has on the shelf

With a 8.5 to 1 and a stock convertor I'd recommend this "Voodoo" cam from Lunati:

Lunati Voodoo 60101 - 256/262 213/219 .454"/.468" 112/108 Hyd/Hyd 1000-5500
Description- Hydraulic: Best mild performance cam. Works excellent in TPI applications. Makes approximately 19" vacuum at idle. Great for performance oriented marine applications and heavy towing applications. Perfect "Street Rod" cam. Has slightly noticeable idle, works with stock converter, A/C, power brakes and stock valve springs in most cases.

It's available from Summit or direct from Lunati.
Should have lots of bottom end and a real good mid range.

More info here if needed: www.voodoocams.com (http://www.voodoocams.com)

Just my $ .02.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
