Hello, Im looking to remove the "Deluxe wood" look from my dash, and go for a nice basic black. Has anyone done this lately? does it peel off, or do I just sand it a bit and paint over it ( its perfectly smooth, not a scratch)
Been working on a dash insert this week, will post some pics when done. Kind of a DSE/stock dash hybrid.

Clean it up and paint it.
Wash everything very well with HOT water and TSP before you do any sanding though. Anything that had ArmorAll on it will need to be degreased before you drive the silicone into the part by sanding it.
I have used Krylons Fusor paint for plastic with good results. Warm the can of paint in hot water before spraying to help it flow.

Can I get a better shot of how you are doing that dash?! That is what I have in my mind but need a bit of a hand in how you integrated it.

Viewing a photo of Janet Reno will most certainly make your wood go away.

Thanks,
Those pieces are mounted by studs. There will be holes left, but those can be welded shut.
You will need a new glove box and ash tray but those are the same as nova 68-74 the boneyards here are still full of those.
The wood grain pieces are worth big $$ to the numbers matching sparkplug wires guys.

No Prob 6'9", heres a few pics of the steel alone, and the back. I used all factory holes, and the steel bolts to the cars dash on top of the plastic piece, so it should be nice and solid. The hardest part( on my patience) was doing to surgery on the stock plastic piece, without cutting into any areas I wanted to keep.
I got the gauge holes cut last night ( do that before you weld the back mounts, it would have been MUCH easier) and I'm going to do the final integration of the 2 parts, and paint today. I have about 30 hours work and head scratchin' into this by now, so I could have bought several DSE units if time truely was money, but this will have a unique look, and I can say I did it myself.

Great, thanks. I think you just solved many hours of head scratching for me! It is like my dad always said: "once you figure out how to do something, it will be that much faster to do the next time, which will probably be never."
Thanks again.

I want it if you remove it!!!
Your probably better off selling it on eBay, I've seen OE woodgrain dash pieces go for north of $500 in good shape!

Cool, I had no Idea there would be demand for the "woody" look. I'll have to take a look at removal, no time till next week.
