Hey guys, It's time for me to start shopping around for engines, and I'm pretty much sold on a 454 small block (almost entirely so i can tell pontiac fans it's a 7.7L :hammer: ), and I'd like to aim for 500 hp, and I'd really like to head the all-aluminum route. Can you all help me put together a list of builders I should look at and compare?

An all aluminum small block is going to be EXPENSIVE!!!!

That would be a good place to start

I looked into the 454 sbc combo and to do it right custom J&E pistons were almost $900; for that extra cost I went to the World aluminum block, but "only" a 427 for basically the same $. The block was a little more, but the pistons were cheaper, and it's 95lbs lighter. The only other options I've seen to do a 454 or larger in aluminum is to use a Dart or other tall deck block and stroke the heck out of it, but to me when the stroke gets bigger than the bore, the efficency is downhill. I'll have dyno #'s shortly, a few days I hope. -Dan

if you only want 500 hp then there is no reason to go bigger than a stock 400ci. Now if you want the bragging rights of a big small block then 500 hp is a no brainer I would venture to say that some stock vortec heads and a decent cam could make that power range. Now if you want to use thoes cubes and have a decent set of heads Like AFR 227's or s set of Canfields then you are going to be closer to the 600 hp range.. and if big is what you want then there is no bigger small block than that 472ci which makes a "daily driver" friendly 615 hp or a nasty 700hp for the street strip brawler. If I was going to go big inch small block I would go for the 472ci. And in fact after I looked at that web site I am seriously concidering buying a long block and useing my AFR"S to top it off with.

I've always been impressed by smaller well developed engines as opposed to big inefficient ones. You're going to get heckled if your 454 small block only makes 500hp. While your pockets will be MUCH lighter than everybody else with 383s, the difference in weight won't be enough for you to keep up with them.

I have built some 488in small blocks.A 454 should make at least 630hp with a mild set of cylinder heads and cam.

I have never seen a 383 run with a 454.theres a couple 454's in town and the worst one makes 650hp on pg.I built a guy 475 that makes 785 on pg.

i would go 454 even if with a steel block

I'd want to see 650-700hp easily out of a 454 if I was building one, one reason why I recomended the Shaffirof motor.

I should have mentioned I meant 500 RWHP, after drivetrain losses. So much closer to 600 crank horsepower.

Keep the ideas coming- I'm still just shopping around, probably won't buy for at least another 8-10 months. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is set in stone.

I sell a symetrical port fuel injected 454 small block chevy with a 9.5 inch deck.the Cyl head on this motor flows 405 cfm on the intake side. This is a motor I've been developing for over a year now.It makes 700+hp on pump gas and is streetable. It is all aluminum also.Price is definately spendy at 28.000 dollars turn key .The throttle responce on this motor is insane. We also will be completing a twin turbo version of this motor in 6 weeks. That will be going in a 2004 gto.Nelson Racing Engines
