Are you superstitious? (sp?)

I know it is a couple days late on the ole 6-6-06 thing, but here is my story. I was delivering a single engine Cessna airplane to a customer about 40 miles away. I got 2/3 there, and the engine suddenly lost power. I knew I had plenty of fuel so I suspected vapor lock. I had to land on a stretch of 2 lane black top and park in front of an old lady's house.

Supecting fuel, we put 15 gallons of fresh 100LL in it which did not fix the problem. It was running very rough. So I went looking for a stuck valve which is not common, but does happen. What I found was the inner and outer intake springs broken on one cylinder and an outer spring on another. After 2 days of repairs in 100 degree weather with no shade, it is finally home. Very spooky to have to get back into an airplane that let you down 2 days before. I still don't believe in superstition, but I have more respect for it now.

I didn't need a special day for me to be superstitious.
I was doing a cross country in a 46 Taylorcraft and had the zuse (sp) fastener on the engine cowling break and part of the cowling bent back in the slip stream and came right through the wind screen.
Had to land on a strech of road, just like you but found an old coat hanger by the side of the road and bent the cowling back and put the coat hanger through the holes left by the fastener and a few twists to break off what wasn't needed and flew back to the airport.
There have been other occurences but I don't chalk that up to bad luck.
I just came to understand the flying light aircraft is dangerous.

I'm superstitious when it comes to my sports teams. If my team wins (Pistons, Lions, Red Wings), I do the same thing for the next game that I did for that game. For instance....during the playoffs, if my team wins and I happened to miss that game....I don't watch the next game. If I'm wearing a certain hat that game....I wear if for the next game. If I'm sitting in a certain spot on the couch...I sit in that same spot. If they lose...I make sure I change it all around. Of course my Wife thinks I'm half crazy....which I am.

I'm like that at work too. If I have a good day at work, I take the same route in, in the morning. Bad day...and I'll take a different route.

I know.....I'm certifiably nuts.

Yes, but at least there have been times in their history when they've not sucked. The Lions however.....yikes.

Being a Lions fan is a sickness. We just love the pain they put us through and we always come clamouring for more. I've been enjoying the pain for roughly 30 years of my life.

Sounds more like someone asked his A&P to take it easy on the last annual than the work of the beast.What gets me is that one spring had been broken for awhile. There is no requirement to tear into a motor during annual inspections. Run up before takeoff was ok as was the magneto check. I did find out the engine had sat for several years. Without preservation, cylinders with open valves caused the springs to rust.

DTI have lots of hours in Taylorcrafts and I own a couple projects. Fun little airplane.

Thats why I prefer rotor-wing.

Tough to beat the ability to make a landing with 0 airspeed.
