I pulled my old double hump heads off so I can resolve an oil consumption problem from worn valve seals. Before I put a set of Pro Toplines on, I want to clean things up as I was going through 1 quart every 600 miles. Needless to say, the piston tops are pretty cruddy. What's the best approach to cleaning them off? Razor, rags and solvent? I've been told to avoid scotch brite pads. Thanks!

There really is no best way, unless you want to pull them out of the motor. Anything you do could send the carbon down the sides to the rings, then you will be pulling them to replace the rings. Scrape carefully with a vacuum running to suck as much out as quickly as possible.

I use a rag soaked with lacquer thinner. Works great. Then vacumn well with a shop vac.

Should I wipe down the bores with oil when I'm done and go through a few cycles to distribute when I'm done?
