So I want to pick up a set of 17's and some race rubber for track days, but frankly i don't care if they're bright pink and shaped like hatboxes as long as I can fit some real rubber on them, have them fit right, and they're CHEAP.
So...
What is the most absolutely cheapestest way to get ahold of some 17x8-9s and 17x10-11s that will fit my car without tons of money in adapters?

i know what you mean, seems no one offers cheap steel wheels in custom offsets to stuff some track rubber under the car correctly. thought of inquiring with the makers of ralleye wheels and street rod steel wheels to see if they could do some proper offsets.

If your willing to go to a 16" or 15" Diamond Racing makes steel wheels(Avenger) in any width in reason. These and the Bassett Racing Wheels are really light for steel wheels(15x8 = 16lbs) and reasonable at around $80-$130 a pop with many backspacing options.

But for 17" those offered by jegs I think are the only steel wheels available. They are heavy and don't offer much options on backspacing. Eagle alloys might have something that could work and they too are more affordable.
What backspacing do you need anyway?
But my advice is to just keep saving your money. Maybe you will get lucky and score something used. I'm saving up for some Bogart wheels. If you want performance these are hard to beat for their weight and customability. I asked about their road race wheel and at 17x9.5 it weighed just over 15lbs! but cost about $400 each(cheap compared to some brands)

Look into 4th gen camaro wheels.
You can get a set of repo 17x9, 17x11 wheels on ebay for pretty cheap.
I run 4 17x11 knockoff ZR1 wheels on my z06 for autoX

I noticed those Diamaond wheels are lug-centric. Is that a disadvantage? Can the local tire store balance a lug-centric wheel?

a 16" may work @ the track, im a long way off so maybe by the time im ready to tear off some laps there will be some better offerings.

Give Jeff Curran a call at Group A Autotrend (GroupAWheels.com). They import ROH wheels. Tell him you want cheap/strong wheels to go road racing with.

Mine were balaced at discount tire. They must use a special adapter to balance them lugcentric. They didn't use the adapter. I've actually never seen the adapter in person. I asked the tire guy about it. he said that most wheels are good at having the centers true, and if I had a problem with vibration they would use the lugcentric adapter, but using it more than doubles balancing time so its not normally used.
I can say I never noticed a vibration, this is also using toyo ra-1 race tires. race tires usual need to be balanced more often. I never rebalaned mine during there life ~10,000 miles.

They rarely have those in stock in the wider widths at least for 4.5" bolt pattern.
