Did you read my previous post? You can run a 17x9.5 with 5.5" backspacing and a 275/40 tire on a 65 Chevelle. A 285 tire will fit snugly with 5 5/8" backspace. Just measure to make sure the car's body is centered on the frame.

The 68-72 Chevelles and El Caminos have the same space but I'm not 100% sure about the earlier cars. My guess is they are the same, too. Never hurts to measure your car first, though.

is his car stock hight? i was going to lower mine 2-3 do u think it will still work? or will i prolly need a smaller sidewall hight? also it will be a 17-8 not 9.5 and the rims have 4-1/2 back spacing

Dave's Elky is lowered probably 2". You should be fine but 5" backspace would be a little better choice on those 8" rear wheels. 64-65's like a little more BS than the later cars.

Can't stress enough that before sending the cash to buy a set of expensive spiffy wheels in a custom offset that you really need to measure to determine exactly what YOUR car needs so far as wheels go. Tolerances weren't all that tight 40 years ago when your car was new, and any manner of things may have changed the dimensions of your wheelwells since then.

Amen to this advice! My neighbor found this out the hard way!
I know a few yrs. ago I paid a guy 20 bucks to measure my NOVA for my 17's and they look and fit nice and tucked no prob's.
I suggested my neighbor do the same but Noooooo he was a wheel specialist! ....... the look on his face when they didnt fit was priceless and wow did the cussing start,I queitly went home!

I have Coys C5's on my 66 elcamino 17 frnt 18 rears but just added 13" rotors so now when i need to inflate my tire I have to remove the wheel due to the air location is right in line with the rotor....they did there home work on that design....so beware

Meassure carefully! Seriously doubt that you can get 9,5 inch with 275 in the rear lowered or not. My wheelwells are modifyed and I barely get 265's in. Maybee 275 but i got a independent rear suspension that barely moves the wheel sideways at all. You have to consider more sideways movement under suspensin travel on a orginal rear axel. At least 1/8 inch, probably a little more on both sides of the tire.
