View Full Version : Finally.. some REAL progress on Penny..

It's funny.. I'm so busy with cars for work that I have little time for my own car. Now that she is a "story" I can justify some wrench time :)
Went to Best In Show today and worked with Dale to build the front subframe. Took all of three hours with stops for pictures.. Everything went together great. We had to modify the shocks to fit (easy) and we were a bit stumped on the splined sway bar arrangement, but came up with a solution.
The subframe is very nice and so far seems well done. The project should move pretty quick now..

Cool Steve. Any guess on how soon it wiil be done?
Well..
Subframe will go on this week.. then plumb the brakes.
LS2 install in a week.. then to fire it up
Then BOS will hang the fenders and put the sheetmetal back on.
Tons of little stuff. Plus I need to build an interior.
Oh, and I am considering rebuilding the rear suspension.. found some shoddy workmanship and bad engineering. Not geometry but more safety related..
Running and driving in a month.. done in two months..

It can..
You can buy just the frame/rack/trans-member or you can buy it all from 21st Century.
I belive the basic frame set-up is $4k.. It uses standard C5 stuff so you can most likely find that on your own (maybe cheaper?)
You can also run either stock C5 brakes or aftermarket stuff like I did..

That looks real nice...I can not wait to see the car back together. I assume you are goining to run the same black Forgelines?
A while back you mentioned that Penny was going to be the subject of a mag story (or maybe a short series) about the transformation of a car from pro-street to pro-touring...is that still the plan?
Also, it seems like I recall that you are changing the hood from the tall cowl...to a shorter cowl hood?

Wow, do they make a front end setup like that - which could be mated to a early mustang unibody?

The whole subframe with C5 brakes and suspension along with thier very nice stepped headers is right near $7k.. I could be wrong since my notes are at my office. Not cheap but very well engineered so far. I like that you can run the concentric lower control arm bolts like the C5 does since it allows for more alignment tweeking. I also like the upper control arm insert system that I haven't seen on any other subframe.
The wheels are a charcoal grey (satin) color.. the intake will be painted to match this.

Not that I have heard.. they phones still work and Brian posts over on lateral-g.net (he works there).. I talked with Ed two days ago and he didn't mention anything. Most likely one of them internet rumors.. lol

Big.. it mostly depends on your inner fender wells.. I am running 275s.. if you didn't have inner fenders (or had custom ones) you could run 315's.

Yep, there will be a couple stories on Penny.. mostly on the parts. Two on the engine dyno, one on the subframe build and install and one on the engine install. Maybe one on misc stuff. Later there will be a couple stories on parts that just happen to go onto Penny (LED tail lights, etc)
And yes.. a shorter cowl hood has already been painted :)

Went in easy and we squared it all up. Installed the Wilwood master and figured out the location of the proportioning valve and clutch master (couldn't get myself to mount it to the fire wall). The brakes really fill up the wheels nice.
Also figured out a sweet way to do the steering column so that it looks super clean from the engine bay. Next we have to bend up so stainless brake lines when the materials get here. In a week or so I will drop in the LS2/T56.. progress.. woot!

I am running the 1 7/8-inch stepped long tube headers by 21st Century Street Machines.. They are not cheap (almost $2k) but they make great power. In dyno testing they beat the Hooker long tubes by 10hp and that's not bad at all.
I bet you could run less expensive headers with this subframe but if you can afford them then the ones from 21st Century are top notch..

$2K is alot for the headers. I paid about $700 for a 1 7/8" Weld-up kit from Kook's and about $750 to make an equal length set of headers out of them. What would be the difference? Kook's includes the flanges, 13 J-bends, o2 bungs, and merge collectors.

Soon.. if I stop running into parts (availability) problems it should be done in a month.. Then some shake out time.
Hope to run it though the PHR battery of tests.. skidpad, cones drag.. all of that.
My goal is to be the fastest tested and to hit 1g skidpad.. hey, I can dream right?

That was just for the shot.. they are safe. I need to pull them tires off and mount my Toyo R-compounds.. :)
The kit seems very well designed. The rear brace went in easy even though it had to be modified to fit my narrowed frame rails. The front floor is tomorrow and it shouldn't be too hard, tedious but not hard. So far it seems about as hard (easy?) as a DSE mini tub install.

Yep, and you don't HAVE to narrow the frame rails unless you want more tire clearance. The kit is built for stock rails but modifying the brace wasn't that hard to do. Nice to have flexability.
My wife is studying for a test tomorrow so I'm bored.. a pick of the finished steering. Orderded a custom length splined rod rather than a generic D rod.

Yea, the housing will be the frame color. The watts link will be painted (it's welded in so it won't be powdered) in some sort of smokey silver and the two watts "links" will be red to tie into the front sway bar. the three main links will done in the frame color as well..

The front support is the toughest part. Mark got it installed . It's mainly a "cut.. test fit.. cut.. test fit" until its right. My narrowed rear is on the way and once it's powder painted it can all get installed. Not any tougher than installing mini-tubs.

The stock engine, engine build, subframe build/install and engine install (from cooling to fuel system) will be covered.
The three-link wont be, at least not on my car. It didn't make sense to do a story on converting a four link to a three link. I opened my wallet and paid $$$$ since I thought this was the best system currently on the market :)

Actually I am just running the single piston PBR's for now.. they are Baer stuff and the drilling and such matches the Wilwoods fine for now.
No ebrake yet.. I might just go with a pinion parking brake and call it a day. Or maybe wheel chocks.. lol
Eventually I will swap in some Wilwood rears with internal parking brakes.

Well in December I was told March.. in March I was told June.. so who knows.. The new 4-piston caliper for this kit is sweet. It's shaped and sized just like the front 6-piston unit so you have the huge calipers front and back but the right number of pistons. Hopefully it will be done soon.

Your car is just incredible Steve! I figured you were going with a 3-link when you started talking about selling a certain Dana 60. Top notch all the way.

Yea, Mark is one of the hardest working people I know.. sorry I slipped in line there, but we only had a short window if we were going to do it. The install really wasn't crazy complicated.. just a bit tedious like a mini-tub. Car should ride and handle very well.. if it doesn't then I don't know why given the driveline and tires.
I think a three piece satin rim on your car would look sick.. I love billet wheels but they are just so common. I like the Vintage wheels, but when I see them I think "torque thrust II".. Again, beautiful wheel but not so much out of the box. I need to cruise down to Marks shop and check out your ride.. maybe snap a pic for the under-construction section :)

D'oh! Dave, your car is getting some good loving too, I owe you pic's, it's looking great. I know you are just kidding, but to reiterate what Steve said, we had about five things trying to work out simultaneously at my bud's body shop which is busting at the seams, I had to jump in or we would have seriously delayed a lot of other projects beyond Steve's car. I'd guess that people might not believe this, but Steve isn't getting "special" treatment, his car is just another of the many other important projects.
I'm struggling with stuff like wheels, paint, etc too. The biggest "fear" I have is dating the car's build. There are a lot of what I think are cool trends going on right now, but you just know in five years, your car will look like it was done five years ago if followed. It is such a tough decision, especially due to the cost of all of this stuff. Maybe I'll just leave the cars in primer! Oh, wait, that'd be the "rat rod" craze. Oh, never mind, I give up.

I am TOTALLY with you on that, esp. when it comes to decisions like paint/wheels, etc. It seems like some of the 'rules' have changed with 1st gen Camaros. 10 years ago there was NO WAY 'd get into graphics or crazy colors, or two-tone paints.

Worked on the LS2 today.. just bolting stuff up to make sure it fits. the Powermaster starter hits the header so that will have to be fixed. Waiting for some pullies to finish being coated. The Fast intake is being smoothed and painted so the one on there is just a stand in.
The valve covers are C5R units..

Since I am running an aftermarket sub I don't need to notch. However, the front of that pan is too deep so I will be running an F-body oil pan. It's powdered in mat black and not installed yet.
On a stock sub you will need to notch the pan :)

Katech.. they also build the C5R's (C6R's?). They slide on the rail, so you can push them back, together, forward or whatever. I just need to make the wiring neat and tidy now.

I am assuming you also have to use the F-body pickup and tray?Do they need to be modded in order to work with the LS2? Also do you retain the LS2 oil pump and O ring?
Thanks for answering so many of my questions.

Yes, you will need the f-body pick up, tray AND you will need an f-body dipstick and dipstick tube.
You won't need to change anything else :)

Steve,
What headers are those?
Steve1968LS2
07-11-2006, 07:13 AM
Steve,
What headers are those?
They are the custom 1 7/8 stepped long tubes from 21st Century Street Machines. The headers are designed to work with their subframe. Pricy (almost $2k) but they are VERY nice. Amazing craftsmanship and they beat the snot out of the 1 3/4 Hooker long tubes on the dyno (10hp with gains across the whole pull).
They are thermal coated in what's called "titanium"... it's just a fancy name for an industrial coating but it had the right function and looks I wanted.

No, I will paint the case.. too big a pain to pull it apart for powder. That's one big avantage of the aluminum case I guess.
gonna leave it in the plastic ship container, mask off the nice parts and give a bunch of coats of cast iron colored paint.

Actually those are 335's.. lol.. The brakes arn't on yet so they will move out 1/4 of an inch. I could go with 355s if they made them. One advantage of an ex-drag race car.

Nah, I'd leave those coil packs right there. Moving them anywhere else defeats the main purpose for why GM put 'em there to begin with. FAST's fuel rails are nice ... that's what Wegner used for my engine dyno runs. My Aeromotive rails are a bit bulky, but look decent once I had 'em redone in black.
How are you gonna do your wiring? I made my own harnesses ... and didn't wrap or use the corrugated stuff. Took me long enough though!
What EFI are you using? Factory?

Factory ECU.. harness by speartech. I will worry about the wiring when when the engine is in. there's almost a valley between the coils and the fuel logs. I might fab up some sort of cover with slots for the wires out to the injectors and coils..
I don't mind the red fuel rails.. adds a little pop (sorta like my red sway bar, watts links and calipers)..

There are no clearance issues with the DSE subframe connectors and our 3-Link, and frankly, no real reason to use anything other than them. They fit great, I can't see a better way to tie the frames together, I run them on my own car in fact.
Steve has been a terrific customer, his install wasn't a typical one in that the frame rails and significant sheetmetal work had been done to the car previously, so there's been an amount of improvising. On top of that, we had problems getting the correct axles (twice now), and a few other non-ordinary things pop up that haven't in the past with any other projects. You know, the "what the heck is that all about, oh well, not a big deal to fix, but...." He's been super patient, and it's been a great learning experience for all involved. His car just gets better, and better every time work gets done on it, it's really looking terrific and should perform really well.

I was amazed at how well they fit and how well they mated up to not only the Latteral Dynamics three link but to the 21st Centrury subframe. Install time was less than 5 hours. Thanks Mark, I guess I've doing this long enough that I worry if no little issues pop up during any sort of work.. lol
The car is going to be killer when done. All the parts just seem to be working together so well so far as far as fitment. I never get sick of looking at pics of your 3-link and now that everything (the DSE SFCs and the 3-link bracing) is coated it looks almost factory. Once we get it done and corner scale it the car should haul ass. Sure, the paint isn't perfect and some of the gaps are less than ideal, but it's filled with what I feel are some of the best performing parts out there and it should look nice enough to take to cruise night or a car show as well as perform good enough for the track.

lol.. thanks.. however, it's not a perfect show car.. there are a few nicks and scrapes here and there. The paint is an 8 out of 10, that sort of deal. To build a "showcar" takes a ton of work so that you don't nick anything during assembley, I don't have that sort of time and besides, I want to drive it on the street, the track and I want to try my hand at the Pony Express.
However, I hope to have the nicest car at open track day.. I'm very happy with the engine bay so far. It has a nice "industrial" look to it. It's a shame to put inner fender wells in it but it's too impractable to not have them and they do add structural support.
I am having a custom DSE core blockoff made with no hole for the hood latch. It will be powdered in matt black and instead of the factory hood latch I will run the aero catches.
I also need to find a place to cover my roll cage in leather. It's a bit scratched up and it's a PITA to paint it in the car.

Steve,
Any way we can get some specs on the engine? Is the water pump stock to the LS2 or is it an aftermarket? How about the powersteering pump? Damper? Valve Covers? Rails for the packs? Etc.? Not going to have A/C? What kind of intake will you be using? Going N/A or EFI? Oh crap, I just saw the second photo! Is that a FAST intake? I love the look. Clean and Mean and not too much Bling! YEAH!!!!!!!:headbang:
BTW.......Have you talked to Wayne Due lately? He tells me he is SUPER busy! Is there something good cooking with him you can let us in on?
Meziere Street electric water pump
4th gen f-body pulley system and PS pump
ATI super dampner
Katech valve covers and fuel rail brackets
FAST intake
No A/C or Heat
:)
No, don't talk to Wayne much.. now that his shop is closed I have no idea what he is up to.

I may be getting an LS2 for my 67 (RipTied) in the near future and want to see your build. Can you feed me a link to view all of your pics? I tried your web site and no such luck. Thanks for sharing

Long day today.. There's a price to pay for trying to have what you want. lol
I wanted to run the f-body LS1 pulley system since I feel it's very compact and has a nice clean look. Instead of the alternator being mounted way high it's down low and tight to the block. I just like how it looks. On my '69 with a regular gear box it was no problem. However with the power rack/pinion it hit the upper hard line. The problem was that he line make a big looping bend and that bend was hitting the back of the alternator.
I cut the tubing so I could use the section with the flare and then drilled and tapped the nut and added a ninety fitting that had a #6 AN on one end. I then had a #6 male welded to the other end of the tubing. This allowed me to get rid of the loop and use a short braided line to give the alternator the needed clearance. As luck would have it the post on the back of the alt perfectly lined up with and hit the new fitting (couldn't have engineered to hit more exactly.. lol). I took apart the alternator and we made a shorter stud that now gives me a wopping 1/4-inch clearance.
Everything fits very tightly, which looks sweet but is a PITA to get right.
Tomorrow the Camaro goes on the rack so we can plumb the fuel lines, secure the tranny, install the driveshaft and we will also run the wiring. The car needs to be done next Tuesday so it can go back to the body shop for the front end re-installation.
Here's the modified steering line:

Hi Steve, Looks great! let me know how it works out.
I just bought an LS2 for my 67. I'm using Wayne Due's front end and will possibly run into the same problem. I haven't decided how I'm going to do the pulley system and any advice would be great. The shop I bout the LS2 from told me that they sometimes get the complete motor with the pulley system, but I'm not getting my hopes up. The motor was for an 06 SSR and was a production over run. I should know more next week.
From the pictures I have seen your car looks great! I will be watching for more posts.

Yea, it's hard to compromise.. I got lucky and Penny had my fav wheels on the car when I bought her.. Wheels make the car so it's worth getting what you want. I didn't build the '69 like I wanted and when done I regretted some decisions. Won't happen this time.
No prob on the "progress" statement.. It's all good :D
Hi Steve,
I was going through your progress on Penny and read the above statement and for one thing I think your 69 is absolutely great! I looked at your site and downloaded many of the pictures and still look at them for inspiration. I planned to build RipTied modeled after your 69. Sorry this is long and drawn out, but my question to you is what would you have done different? I have not seen your 69 in person, but love the way it came out. I planned on a modern suspension and will be using Wayne Due’s C4 front and rear setup, but my goals for the car are more for a street driven not race driven car. I have noticed that both Z069 and Penny are geared more towards the track. What did you not do with the 69 that you wish you had?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
Penny is coming along beautiful and I hope I get to see the complete master piece in person when completed.

The '69 was great but it came out more "street rod" than what I wanted.. it was plush, comphy and not "on edge" enough.. It was like a trophy wife that looks great and is fun but doesn't have that edge. Penny is like that bad girl you dated in college.. she is tons of fun but edgy and you really don't want to introduce her to your parents. Is that a good analogy?
I would have mini-tubbed the '69.. ditched the chrome.. caged it and put a bigger cam in the engine.. If I want comfort I will drive my daily driver.. If I want to scare small children I will drive Penny.. lol
Oh, and the '69 handled good and stopped great but the '68 will be in a different league as far as handling..
And while the pics make it look like a show car the paint is only an 8 out of 10 and there are a few nicks and imperfections.. That way I won't be afraid to drive it.. lol
Bouns pic with the engine wired up.. getting closer..

I’m in the middle of a DSE mini-tub and IRS install at the moment. I’ll post pic’s when I have something presentable. I did find an LS2 crate motor for my project and hope I can get your advice from time to time when I get closer. LSx engines have "retainers" the help keep the lifters from falling. They work great when the engine is new and less-so as the engine gets older. Unless the engine is pretty new it's still a good idea to use magnets if you can.
My shop does swaps all the time and they hardley ever have an issue with lifters falling.

Figured out the front wheel size. Now we just have to ship the them back to Forgeline so they can "adjust" them. It's 18x9 with a 6.5" backspace.

And here she is as we finished up for the morning... need to lower the back down a bit. Install the grill and voila! it just might be a car.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
With the hood on we were able to check out where to mount the aero-catch hood pins. The problem is that the catch (which requires a large hole) would need to mount in the most PITA place in the hood. Installing would require a lot of metal work to make look right from the inside. Since I am quickly running out of $$$ I will revisit this idea someday. We were hoping it would fall in flat place on the hood, but no luck.

Ok, I’m going to ask another question (it’s probably in the picture somewhere). What size wheels are you using up front and what back spacing? I just got quizzed on a 18 x 10 wheel with 6.25 back spacing. I was told that the tire was hitting the sway bar on a C5 sub frame (WD). Are you running wheels that deep?
Also, I would like to know where you get your fasteners for your fenders? I like the washers and bolts you are using.

18x9 with a 6.5 inch backspacing. Worked with the wheel deal. The ones on the car now are wrong.
Remember that I'm running a splined sway bar that gives a bit more clearance.
Fasteners are from www.hillcofasteners.com (http://www.hillcofasteners.com) they are a three piece deal. The milled aluminum countersunk washer, the chrome washer and the button head allen. The bolts holding the fenders to the firewall add in one more large non-countersunk washer.
Gets expensive though..

All the "bumps" were cut out of the original one so what was left was flat. Then a paper template was made. From that a panel was made from 16 guage steel. That panel was boned to the remnants of the factory firewall using a super epoxy called Fusor. After drying the plate was perimeter welded, ground smooth then normal body work. The lower holes, factory steering column hole, wire block hole and all that were covered up. There are only one three holes in the whole firewall. One for the small racing column, one for the master cylinder and one for the clutch master.
Here are some pics:

They are thermo clamps by Gates (www.gates.com (http://www.gates.com)) they shrink when heated and work pretty damn good. Only cost a couple bucks each. DSE is running them on thier test car and Kyle likes them.

I absolutely love this car! This thing just keeps getting better and better. Shay's Red/White 69 Camaro used to be my Camaro of choice but, I think I have a new favorite. Nice work Steve!

Fasteners are from www.hillcofasteners.com (http://www.hillcofasteners.com) they are a three piece deal. The milled aluminum countersunk washer, the chrome washer and the button head allen. The bolts holding the fenders to the firewall add in one more large non-countersunk washer.
Steve - I have a question regarding these fasteners. I love the look, but have a question about what you are using from them. I see the anodized aluminum beauty washers, but none appear to be as large as a fender washer. Do you happen to have the part no.'s of what you bought? I understand it gets pricey, but when you get so deep in a project, what's a little more for ultra-cool fasteners? I would appreciate any help you could provide.
Thanks,
Mark

I ran into the same issue with my wayne due frame and alternator to rack clearance. Mine seemed a little worse in both high and low pressure lines were hitting. Rack or motor hieght must be slightly different on mine.
I opted to make an extension bracket to swing the alternator over and up. THis should give me plenty of clearance to all rack lines.

Newest trinket.. The perfect compliment to the billet hinges. I had the spring thermal coated to tie into the headers and intake tube.
