That went into a drag Camaro about 4 years ago. PHR did a story on it around the same time. Old news.

Tyler, was that the orange 2nd Gen (if you could call it that...) that Pertronix had at SEMA a few years ago that you're talking about? I remember at least a pair of turbos on that thing, but for some reason I think it had more.

I'm sure it was a 4th gen all white ala "casper" if I remember right, Mike Moran,

Yup. Mike Moran and Casper. Casper is a "street car" racer. If memory serves it was a 477 with 4 - 80s. It had o ringed intake ports amoung other things. It was the loudest popin SOB you ever heard when it got on the waste gates, but it never really lived up. Thought it would be the first door car in the 5s, but never came close.

I used to street race (sorry) Mike Moran back in the 80s in Detroit. We would meet behind Roush Racing in Livonia, where he would normally tatoo somebody. He was (and remains) one of the more ingenuitive / clever / find a way to exploit the rules guys around. He had a GN that had all kinds of work done. When you popped the hood, it looked like a stock 3.8 with a bigger compressor housing. What you didn't see:
1. Hidden nitrous in the spare saver tire, plumbed down the frame, through trans bellhousing, through the back of the intake (bottom), with fogger nozzles.
2. One of the first Stage 3 4.1 blocks. billet crank / caps / etc. even went to the trouble of duplicating the factory paint on a set of Indy-style aluminum heads.
3. Chassis welded up & stiffened. Hand-made rear C/As with undercoating on them. All kinds of racer tricks hidden here & there.
The list goes on, but man that thing was fast- and just fast enough to beat whoever he was racing. I worked for Turbo Engineering in 86/87 where we did some intercoolers and compressor housings for Buddy Ingersol's Pro Stock (banned) Skylark. Moran's name would always come up when we discussed the development of the 4.1 heads. Seems he (Moran) was a 'beta' tester for them at one time.
OK- flashabck over.

Ah, the older street racers speak up, and a couple people who have kept up with the fastest street car ordeal,

I actually have the article at home all about that engine. It would take me a little while to dig it up and obviously its not necessary. I do remember that engine though. It said right on the cover something like "2,200hp quad turbo monster"

WOW...small world. I used to street race Mike too back in the early 90's. I never cared for the guy personally...I always thought he was a pr*ck (as I think most drag racers are). But he had a fast car and is a genius when it comes to drag engines, I'll give him that. We used to have the big gatherings out there in the lot at Holbrook Racing. If you were around back then you might have seen me and my friend Dennis out there. I had my '68 Camaro which was all in red primer (331 with a 125 pill on it) and Dennis had a black '70 Cutlass with an LS7 (the original LS7). The Goodyear parking lot on Telegraph and I-96 was another huge hangout (actually that was the biggest one). Eddies Drive-In in Harrison Township. We would all set up the races there and then head over to the entrance ramp to I-94 off of Hall Rd. An old friend of mine (Jason Gruda) used to hang with Moran and his crew and had a drag car called Casper Jr. Do you remember a guy named "Howdy"? He drove around in a tubbed out blue pick-up truck and used to set up all the races? Greg Czerny from Great Lakes Customs used to race his Mustang out there too (another pr*ck). Sorry for the abrasive attitude, but these people are primarily the reason I got out of drag racing and fell into Pro-Touring.

Pretty sure he was still in the tuning phases when the class outlawed 4 turbos..so he build that purple monte or whatever with just twins. W2W would know I'm sure. They used Casper for testing the Gen3 stuff, and used one of Moran's BBC's to test BS3 (2600+ hp twin turbo).

really weird how Buddy Ingersol gets outlawed when he's the closest car to being a real production car out there. Bunch of front drive cars originally with 4's and 6's running big V/8's and conventional trans/rears..

Now Mike Moran is often at Dart machinery picking up tips from Richard Maskin and the pro stock builders. Trapin - I'm buddies with Jason Gruda too, small world! Mike Moran used to street race his old pinto wagon as well as that GN.

Actually, the Mule did just chew up yet another solid roller lifter and then the lifter ate the cam just a week ago. I think it got changed over to an HR setup in a big hurry to make it out for power tour!

Mikey hangs out over here at the shop quite a bit. Casper resides in the back of our shop. We used Casper to make the first ever 6-second gen3 engine pass with Mike behind the wheel. We have pic's and videos on our site.

Also pics of the quad turbo setup in the gallery if you look around.

Last I talked to him was about a year and a half ago. He's actually the guy that got me interested in Hot Rods. I think he worked for Roush Racing for a bit too. We stopped talking when he started hangin' around Moran (for obvious reasons).

Tony-
I agree; most of the racers were *****s, but c'mon; we're talking Detroit here! Did you ever make any of the runs down 6 mile or 5 mile (on opposite ends of Rouge Rvr park)? I didn't have much back then- a black 70 mustang fastback w/ a 351C transplant.
I used to go to the races at the 96/ Telegraph corner. The White Ccastle parking lot was like a betting house half the time. 'place ya bets', then off to run (ironically) in front of the AAA building on the other side of Telegraph. That's the last time I saw Mike beat down on some guys.
I worked for Carl Holbrook for a year; talk about abrasive! Back then Chris Farmer and the old guy Herb were still there. His son Chris and I went to RU together (he's older). Funny- I just saw him at PRI last December. Small world indeed.
I still enjoy drag racing, but don't get to do it much. One thing that pissed me off was all the dope dealers jumping into street racing; they weren't the most 'stable' when it came to a loss.

Yeah, you're right...this IS the "D". But I'm such pacifist. LOL!!! I was probably one of the nicest guys out there (which is probably why I lost so often). I hung out in Detroit quite a bit. French road was epic. It's a miracle no one was killed hugging the sides of that street as cars whipped by at 150mph. I used to love all the arguements too before and after a race. But then one night some idiot pulled a gun on another guy (no shots were fired) but after that we stopped going there. French is where the big money was, which of course attracted thugs. Of all the venues, I think I miss Telegraph the most. Those truely were "the days".
