Hi all,
I previously posted on the new members message board about my 65 Comet project. Now that it's underway, I plan to give regular updates on this thread. Any comments, advice, guidance, criticism will be much appreciated.
As I said in my prior post, I wanted to do a resto-mod project for a long time, and I finally hired a shop to do all the work. I've been pretty ignorant about cars in general, but I love to learn about them and have been doing all my homework since the project started.
So far, we've decided on the following: (1) New Ford crate Mach 1 4.6L DOHC engine; (2) Art Morrison Max G chassis (with all related suspension, brake, and steering components); (3) Intro Ram 5 wheels (18's all around); (4) BF Goodrich g-Force KDW tires (225/45/18 in front and 255/45/18 in rear); and (5) black exterior and all new interior (details still being decided).
The disassembly of the car has started and it is getting soda-blasted today. I've attached some pics of the car. The first pic is the way the car looked when we bought it and the last one is its current state. More pics can be found on the shop's website:
http://www.woodyshotrodz.com/project_1965_mercury_comet.htm
New pics of the car will be added to the website as the project progresses.
I also wanted to say that the shop, Woody's Hot Rodz (outside of Cincy), has been absolutely great. You should check out their other currect and past projects -- they do some real cool work.
Anyway, hope to hear from people about the project. Thanks in advance!!!
Regards,
Josh

I love those things. My older brother once owned a 65 Comet GT with the 271hp/289 & 4spd.
Good luck and keep us updated on your project. Sounds awesome!

I live about 5 minutes from Bright, IN. I've never talked to the guys at Woodys, but it looks like they do good work.
It sounds like a sweet setup. I've been wanting to build a unibody car on a Max G for a while, but I've got too many other projects to finish and not enough money! I'll be looking forward to seeing some build pics of the project.
I'm jealous!

Clint, Thanks for the response. I took a look at your links and they all look great (I especially like the 69 El Camino -- very sharp)!
Brandon, If you get a chance, you should stop by Woody's and talk with the guys. Chris is the owner and he is super nice and very willing to give ideas, etc. By the way, all your rides look great and I really like the 67 Chevy II SS (even is it's not a Ford/Mercury)!
I'll keep everyone posted on the Comet.

Not sure how late in the evening the guys at Woody's keep at it. I'll post a pic of the Max G chassis when it comes in. If you want to go over to the shop to look at it in person then, let me know . . . I'll be happy to ask Chris if there is an evening where someone will be at the shop.

Wow... these mid '60s Comets are getting pretty popular as pro-touring/restomod candidates. There are a couple on the forum now and a couple have shown up in magazines lately too. Sounds like it may be the last chance to get one for decent coin before they go all '69 Camaro on us.
BTW, you might dig these pics... The top one is a photochop I did for a member of the forum. The other is a car done by the guys at Blue Moon.

Thanks, Wyatt -- I agree that the Comets are beginning to gain more recognition. I also think that what's interesting about the car is that there is a huge difference between the Comet's look from year to year. The pics you posted are cool (I already had seen your photoshop from the other thread) -- my guess is that they both are 1964 models? If you look at the early 1960's models to the early 1970's models (like CometChick's badass 1973 Comet GT), there is a huge difference in the look of the car. My favorite, of course, is 1965 -- first year the car had stacked headlights (while losing some of the older looking trim and fins) and before the lines of the Comet became more rounded (which started in 1966). Here is a pic of a 1965 from another website:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
Hopefully, my 65 Comet restomod will get others interested also.
Kaiser, I agree that the Comet reminds me of a smaller GTX -- I have always thought they had a similar look.
Andrew, thanks for your comments. I checked out your Nova and it is awesome -- very clean lines, but also with a real mean look to it.
No real update since the Comet was soda-blasted. In case anyone cares, attached are photos of the wheels (Intro Ram 5) and steering wheel (Budnil Famosa) that we've selected. Pics are from the companies' websites -- I'll post pics of my actual products once they get delivered.
Thanks again everyone!

I kind of like the rareness of my Comet. The 64 is my favorite with the side by side headlights. That chap really jumped the gun on me with that Maroon Comet. Still cant figure out how the rendering you did for me Buddha is exactly how Blue Moon completed their car. It is nice to see it come to fruition though. Just have to come up with some new, more creative ideas. I just hope the Comet popularity doesnt get too out of hand. I like driving something that not very many folks have.

The team at Woody's has finished the initial work on the hood for the Comet (see pics below). The hood is based on the original Comet Cyclone hood, but customized so that it will be functional with the 4.6L Mach 1 engine. When it's all done, the entire hood will be painted black. Let me know what you think.

Steve, I think it would be great to get the car in PHR or Hot Rod -- I guess I need to get off my butt and send something in! P.S. I've been following the Bad Penny build and it is amazing!
Chris, if you can scan them in and post them to the thread, I'd love to see some of the pics of your dad's 64.
Joe, thanks for the comment on the hood. Are you back from vacation . . . if so, looking forward to seeing some pics of your 65.
Finally, 64Comet, attached are a couple extra pics of the car -- body mods are pretty much done . . . once the AME chassis gets delivered, there should be more progress.

Hi all. Been out of town for awhile, but wanted to provide a couple of updates on the Comet.
First, some really cool news is that the project will be in the October issue of Ford Builder Magazine -- haven't seen an issue yet, but the magazine should be out now (or soon).
Second, we're still waiting on the Max G chassis -- I'll post pics as soon as I get them.
Third, Woody's decided to replace the three frontside trim inserts with some metal inserts that will be chromed. I think they are a great looking upgrade from the old inserts (while still keeping the same basic idea from the original Comet). Here is a "before" picture of the old inserts before the car was blasted:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
And here is a picture of the new inserts (not yet chromed):
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
Finally, Woody's decided to add a center brake light between the back of the trunk and the rear windshield. The brake light will be sunk into the body and, after the car is painted (with the brake light taped off), the clear coats will go over the brake light. The end result will be that the brake light should seem to be part of the body. Pics at this point are hard to see, but here are a couple:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)

That's it for now. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,

Very kool. I Like the third break lite idea but wondered about its actual affectiveness. As you said the pictures probly don't do it justice. But from what I can make out in the pictures, I cant tell if the placement is going to allow the light to shine in the direction neccesary for the driver behind you to see it affectively. That rear deck area is prity flat. What did you do to make it visable to a driver that is say 20 to 30 feet behind the car and not just right behind you in city streat traffic?
Krashyman
11-17-2006, 06:46 AM
Wyatt, thanks for the encouragement. The current plan for the completion of the project is March, so there should be a lot done beginning in the next month or so. The other three builds being done by Woodys are pretty cool -- and all of them, like the Comet, are going on Morrison chassis. What is the plural of chassis?
Trackrat, you raise a good question, and it is not clear how effective the thrid break light will be -- especially as you go further back from the car. But, there is a slight incline on that part of the rear deck and, with an LED light in there, people should be able to see it. Also, it will helpful even if it is only the most effective for cars immediately behind me -- especially in the traffic around where I live (people are always on your butt). Finally, once the clear coat goes over the brake light and it "disappears" until the brake is applied, it will just be a cool little feature. Not many center brake lights like that on 1965 cars!

The project is starting to pick back up, with an estimated finish date of March 21. The current schedule is below, along with a few new pics. Joe, I don't know the answer to your question yet -- but as soon as the body gets lowered onto the AME chassis and we get that info, I'll make sure to post more pics.
Would love to hear from folks about the proposed schedule and the pics. Thanks all and happy new year!
January 1-15. Prime body and panels, reprime, repeat. Order remaining parts, send chrome out for rechroming.
January 15-30. Cut floors and unibody out, brace body, mount to rotiserie, begin reinstalling floors.
February 1-15. Finish floor pan installation, fab core support, mount body to chassis, begin electrical work, begin seat upholstry and finish console.
February 15-28. Fab inner fenders, front-end body panel alignment, fab motor and trans mounts, fab air intake ducts. Door upholstry complete.
March 1-21. Paint/clear/sand/buff, assemble panels, finish electrical, finish interior, final assembly, work out bugs -- take for ride!

We're considering going beyond the 4.6L engine and going to the next step of modern mustang modular power. There are a couple of choices out there.
I don't want to clutter up the project thread with this stuff, but I'll update with the choice we make once we make it.
In case you don't normally browse the engine threads and have an opinion, I would love to hear from you in the other thread. It can be found at: https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26049

A couple of quick updates:
We've decided to go with the 5.4L shelby svt engine (the engine that is in the 2007 GT500). We're still working out issues relating to the size of the engine (including the height with the supercharger), the wiring harness, and the computer -- assuming we get these things in order, we'll be using the engine.
We're also going with a manual tranny instead of an automatic -- and we're using the TR6060 (an updated version of the T-56). The TR6060 is the transmission that is in the 2007 GT500 (and supposedly will be going in the 2008 Viper and Corvette).
Finally, as to the progress of the car, the floors have been cut out and the firewall is being smoothed. Some pics are below.
Thanks for any views on engine/transmission choice and progress of project.

Josh, not sure what your plans are, but for such a swap, you may be better off using an aftermarket engine control system like DFI or FAST, rather than trying to make things work with the factory EEC system. That way you don't have to be worrying about running it as the returnless fuel system, charcoal canister and related stuff, etc.

Thanks Ed. I agree and, after talking with a few places, it sounds like the factory computer would not really work all that well with the engine going into a non-GT500. The problem we're running into is that a lot of the aftermarket companies can't answer our questions because the engine itself is so new.
I'll let everyone know what we decide to do -- and any views from anyone on the best way to wire up and control this new engine (and any product that would do it) are very much appreciated.

No new pics, but I have an update about the GT500 engine and computer situation.
After looking at all of the issues and getting some good advice from Ed, Frank, Animosity, and others here on the pro-touring threads, Woody's talked with a bunch of people in the industry about the GT500 engine and what to do about the PCM and harness. After doing a bunch of research, we decided not to go with an aftermarket control system/harness and, instead, try to find a stock system programmed for our usage. Another issue we ran into during the research was the drive-by-wire throttle for the GT500.
But, the good news is that Woody's talked with Sean Hyland of SHM and they are going to be able to get us the GT500 engine and all necessary parts, such as the stock engine management system/computer (pre-programmed), engine wiring harness (modified for our hook-ups), throttle pedal sensor and throttle pedal (drive-by-wire), motor mounts, engine clutch, bellhousing, AC compressor, intercooler, etc., etc. Woody's also believes that the engine height will not be an issue and that they can make it work. And, we are getting the TR-6060 six-speed from Kar Kraft as a pull-out from a GT500. So, the basic drivetrain of this old Comet will be all 2007 GT500!
The only other update is that all of the chrome for the car has been replated. We're still hoping that the entire project will be completed by the end of March, so things are getting exciting.
I'll post more pics when I get them.
Thanks,
Josh

Sorry it's been so long since I last posted. The work on the Comet has been moving slowly while Woody's finishes up their three big magazine builds. More importantly, my wife and I had our first child -- a baby girl named Pearl -- and so things have been hectic!
According to Woody's, my Art Morrison chassis has shipped and the other projects are nearing completion, so it seems like the Comet will be making some good progress soon.
I'm including a pic of Pearl (the youngest pro-touring fan on the website?) as well as a few photos of the Mach 1 that Woody's is building -- my favorite of the their three big builds -- including the AME chassis that will be very similar to mine! The Mach 1 has a spread in the May edition of Super Rod, so check it out if you get a chance.
I'll post updates on the Comet as soon as I get them.

In addition to my Comet and the Mach 1, Woody's is putting the Max G under a 1940 Willys and a 1955 Chevy 210 Del Ray. Pics of all the builds (including the Mach 1) can be found at http://www.woodyshotrodz.com/current_projects.htm.
Joe, thanks for the kind words and thanks for following the project. I wish I could have posted more updates and pics before now, but my hope is that the project is going to pick up soon. The three magazine builds are scheduled to be done this month and then the Comet will be the focus of the shop until it is done. I'll share updates as I get them.
Thanks,
Josh

Good to hear from you, Ed. I believe that the chassis, as shipped, is just about 1,000 lbs (give or take 10%) -- at least that's what I was told when I called AME. I'll let you know if Woody's tells me that mine is significantly different.
If Craig Morrison happens to see this thread (I'll ping him), he can weigh in on the question. Get it? "Weigh in" on the question. Hahaha (sorry, I have not had much sleep recently).
Anyway, I can't wait to see the install of the Max G -- Woody's tells me that it is just an awesome product.

Ed- The crate pictured above usually weighs in at around 825-900lbs, but keep in mind, close to 200-250lbs of that is wood. While you will probably be adding some weight to your car, it is all down low, which isn't going to hurt your center of gravity. If anything, it might actually lower it a bit because of the downward weight shift.

We make them for just about anything...heck, we even made one for a '42 Chrysler, '97 Pontiac, on and on. But we've done several for Chargers.
I'm not real up-to-date on pricing, but a very rough ballpark (there tons of options and upgrades) is $10K. Hopefully Craig can set me straight on that if need be.

Thanks, Matt -- glad to hear a Chevy guy can like a Merc! I've always thought that the 1965 Comet was similar to the 1966 Chevy II (as well as the 1967 Plymouth GTX). I'll definitely keep you posted and will send final pics to AME once the project is completed.

we smoothed the cowl on the 65 vert we built, and since the classic auto air uses recirculated air only, it didn't matter
it even came with block off plates for the cowl vents under the dash, plus it looks a lot better as well

Nothing new to add on the Comet, but the three other big builds at Woody's should be done by now. They are scheduled to be tested today and tomorrow by Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin, Jr., his brother Mike Coughlin, and Formula 1 driver Tommy Byrne. A link to a release about the testing of the three cars is:
http://www.teamjegs.com/presskit/release.asp?id=637
Assuming the other three cars do well during the testing and there is no follow-up work needed, the Comet should be the focus of the shop going forward. The Max G chassis will be the first big step, and the May issue of Super Rod has part 1 of a great article regarding Woody's install of the Max G in the Mach 1. I posted a link to the article in another thread under the suspension forum, but in case you don't browse that forum, here is the link:

I hope to be posting new updates and pics of the Comet real soon.

I'm happy to report that work has begun again on the Comet! The shop is installing the Max G chassis -- action photo is below. I'll post more pics as I get them.
George, to answer your question, we do plan on having as clean of an engine bay as possible. The engine dimensions, however, are pretty darned large and it is going to be a real tight fit. We won't know the plans for the AC lines (or anything else) until the engine arrives. I've seen the 5.4 mod engine from the GT500 and it can look somewhat messy with the harness -- think spaghetti -- so there will be some planning involved to get a real clean look.
Thanks,
Josh

We decided to go all Alpine for the stereo system. Here is a list (and stock photos) of the components:
1. Head Unit -- Alpine CDA-9885. This is a head unit with single CD player and ability to display and control satellite radio and an iPod through the head unit.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
2. Front door speakers -- Alpine SPR-17C. These are two 6.75" coaxial speakers, which are made to fit in 6.5" openings. I know that component speakers would be a better choice for the front, but these are pretty good two-way speakers and they will make the install much easier.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
3. Rear package tray speakers -- Alpine SPR-69C. These are two 6"x9" coaxial speakers.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
4. Amplifier for four speakers -- Alpine PDX-4.100. This is a four channel amplifier (100 W per channel) for the four speakers.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
5. Subwoofer -- Alpine PLV-7. This is a subwoofer enclosure from Alpine. The enclosure has several small subwoofers (equivalent to two 12" subwoofers) and a built-in amplifier (500 W), so it is self-powered.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://imageshack.us)
6. Satellite radio and iPod cable -- Sirius SIR-ALP1 and Alpine KCE-422i. These are a satellite radio receiver box (and satellite radio antennae) and cable for the iPod. Both get hooked up to the Alpine head unit, and both can be hidden so that the satellite radio and iPod will display on (and play thru) the Alpine head unit.
We got all the above stereo components through Crutchfield, and they are sitting at Woody's waiting for their time to be installed. If anyone has any opinions on the components, it would be great to hear your views.
Thanks,
Josh

Craig, thanks -- check out this month's SuperRod . . . Woody's made the cover (Chris, the owner, is on the cover with the 55 Chevy). All three Buckaroo buildoff cars are pretty much done and I believe they are being tested next week.
Joe, to answer your questions about the rear tires, it's actually been an issue we've been discussing in the past week. The original plan was to go with 255/45/18 in the rear and 225/45/18 in the front. But that was when we were going with the 4.6 mod motor (305 HP) and auto tranny. Now that we're using the GT500 5.4 mod motor (500 HP) and TR6060 (or T56) manual tranny, we thought that we should get a little thicker for the rear rubber. The problem is, when we ordered the AME chassis, the plan was for the smaller tires.
Woody's is looking into how thick we can go without having to redo anything with the chassis. We also want to avoid mini-tubbing if possible (although there is a chance we will need to do it). I would like to try to use 275/40/18 in the rear. I believe that this would be about a 10.80" width and 26.70" total height (wheel and tire).
Either way, I'll be sure to post info/pics when we get it figured out.
Thanks,
Josh

Thanks LMDGUY, glad you like it.
Joe, good to hear from you -- it's been awhile. I know you're a Comet guy each time you post, because you always seem to ask the right questions.
I talked with the shop earlier this week and, indeed, they are going to need to set the engine back farther. To do so, they likely will be cutting out the firewall and moving it back. The core support also is being fabbed and will be made so that the rad will fit -- should look pretty cool also.
While there is a lot of weight in the back of the Comet, the position of the engine also should help with front/rear weight distribution. The new GT500s are something like 57% front and 43% rear, and my guess is that we'll be in the low 50s for the front (high 40s for the rear). Overall weight should be just around 4,000 lbs (give or take).
The engine is going to be a real tight fit, but we think it will squeeze in there. The biggest thing is the height, because the awesome hood is already fabbed (see pics earlier in thread) and we don't want to modify it anymore. Hopefully, this shouldn't be a problem, and moving the engine (and firewall) back will actually help the top to bottom fit. Also, we don't plan to have a super low car anyway. While I know people will criticize the ride height, I like cars that sit up just a bit higher than many pro-touring cars (as long as it doesn't affect the handling too much).
As for more pics of the body/chassis, I don't have any now, but I've asked the shop for more and will post them when I get them.
Thanks,
Josh

Still in the planning/dreaming/researching stage so it is especially cool to see project builds on this site, especially one that is same make, model, year as my own! Thanks for answering all my questions, more to come no doubt!
The engine set back/weight distribution stuff sounds good, all the tweaking to get that engine to fit(under that bitchin hood too) will totally be worth it. I haven't seen too many 65 Comets with big inch rims so it's hard to say what a good ride hieght is, the wheel openings are a lil funky-not round like a Camaro or Mustang-and at this point I'm still pondering, cutting and pasting to see what looks right.I gots lots of time to ponder..cut and paste...so by the time I start in a few years I'll have a clear plan(yah right!)

Joe -- The rear tires are the 255's (the ones we ordered last year when we thought we were putting the 4.6L in the car). We're going to talk about whether we can go any wider without doing any major work, which leads me to . . .
George -- Thanks for the pics on the "mini-mini tub," I'll make sure to pass them along to the shop. If anyone is interested in following another 1965 Comet build, take a look at George's website -- www.1965comet.net (http://www.1965comet.net) -- he's doing all the work and it's a really great build. George, looking forward to more pics on your site!
Chris -- Those vintage photos are the best -- especially the ones of your folks. I've seen a couple of my dad and mom from the late 60s with their mustang and there's something about an old photo of family with a cool car. That would be a good thread (vintage photos of family with their old cars) for the Multimedia forum if there isn't one already. Thanks for posting them.
Cubes -- Not sure what backspacing will be yet b/c we might change the tires (see comments above). I'll post all the tire info when we we make the final decisions. As for the shorty column, the engine is huge (dimensions, not CIs) and the firewall is being pushed back, so we thought the shorty would make everything easier -- leg room, pedal location vs. where the column goes through the firewall, etc, etc. Plus, ididit was nice enough to donate the column and they thought it was the best one for us to use.
I guess that's all for now. Thanks again for all the comments.
Best,
Josh

Chris,
We thought about using Hydroboost to save space, but at this point we've decided on just going manual. Everything I've looked at says that a manual system with the right master cylinder and correct pedal ratio can work just as well as any power brakes -- and also has a great feel to it. This is not to say anything bad about Hydroboost -- everyone raves about it and we definitely would go with it if we decide to use power brakes.
Thanks,
Josh

It's going to be be bolt on -- just like the Mach 1 that Woody's did for the Buckaroo Buildoff in Super Rod.
Obviously, the Comet is still early on and so I'm not sure if there are pics that would help you, but I'll defintely post them as they become available. In the meantime, here are two links to a Super Rod tech article (part 1 and part 2) that details the installation of the Max G chassis on the Mach 1 with pretty specific photos. And the Comet will be done just about the exact same way.

A couple of quick updates:
We decided to go with a gas tank from Rick's -- I found Rick's from reading threads here on pro-touring and everyone seems to rave about the tanks, so I'm excited to see how it turns out.
We're still waiting on the motor mounts -- once they arrive, Woody's will be able to finish the mock up of the motor and tranny (and how they will be positioned in the car), and then re-build the firewall and the floors. Once all of that is done, it sounds like paint is the next step!
Woody's received the transmission -- we decided to go with a T56 instead of waiting to try to find the TR6060 (the TR6060 might be available, but it sounds like there could be issues with the positioning of the shifter). Here is a picture of the tranny:

Manual brakes will be just fine! We've done manual only on our projects, and if you pick the right MC they work awesome. Our 55 does 60-0 in 132' and our 60 Vette does it in 116'.

In addition to talking about the Comet, this thread has posted updates on the three Buckaroo Buildoff cars being done by Woody's Hot Rodz (the shop building the Comet).
Well, the three cars are fininshed, and so I thought I'd post a link to the November issue of Super Rod magazine, which has a full spread on the three cars built by Woody's (they made the cover). There are a few quotes from Art Morrison in the article as well as some other fun info.

what are you gonna use for engine managament?
I believe that Sean Hyland was able to get a stock computer for the GT500 and re-program it to be able to work in the Comet -- at least that was the plan the last time I talked with the shop about it. If you go back in this thread, there are a number of posts on the engine management issue . . . there was a real question in the beginning as to whether we could make the GT500 engine work in this application, and we considered after-market ECMs, etc. I'll give an update once the shop focuses on making sure that the engine works (lol).

Thanks, Joe. The set back of the engine is as far back as it could go without creating issues with the firewall -- but we won't know the exact measurements until the shop permanently mounts the engine (and they can't do that until they plan out the spacing for everything else -- intercooler, etc.).

What flavor is the interior gonna be and what are you going to do for seatbelts?I have the stock lap belts but would really like a shoulder belt too, not easy for hardtops and convertibles.
The floors look great,on both sides!
Krashyman
12-14-2007, 05:10 AM
Thanks Motown -- I agree, the "square hump" is neat and also fits with the overall look of the car.
Joe -- We're getting new belts, but just standard lap belts. We were never going to do race harnesses, so the question was shoulder vs. lap. As you said, with the car being a HT with no center post, a front shoulder belt would not be as easy as on a sedan. It obviously could be done, but the main problem is that the belts would be hanging in that open space between the front and back seats (which also would affect the look of the car). So, we decided to just go with lap belts all around -- at least for now (it's something that I might change down the road).
As for the flavor of the interior, it will be black and chrome/polished aluminum (just like the exterior). Probably use a synthetic leather (for durability and, as I understand it, the new stuff looks just like leather) mixed with some real leather accents. Buckets in the front with center console. Bench in the back. JME 6-gauge gauge pod. Classic Instruments All-American Series gauages. Also, more info on stereo system, steeing wheel, etc. is earlier in the thread.
I'll post pics of the steering column install soon.
Thanks,
Josh

Miss Daisy -- looks like it is a 1965 202? It's a great color and the car looks real slick . . . I bet you get some compliments when you drive it around!
I'll be posting some update of my Comet in a bit.
Thx,
Josh

Hi Josh,
"COOL" location for the 'shift light'. Air vents are looking good too - are you gonna have AC?
Happy New Year - come on Spring!!
Bob
Thanks for posting, everyone. I'll try to answer some of the questions.
Young Gun, Bob, and Joe -- The current deadline is May 1. We were going to shoot for the beginning of March, but gave it a couple of extra months to help make sure it gets done (and to allow for better weather for testing, etc.). So, it should be with me on May 1 (a little over two years since the project began).
Thanks for posting that link, Joe. For some reason, the link has changed slightly, so I think you need to go to: www.woodyshotrodz.com/project_1965_mercury_comet.htm (http://www.woodyshotrodz.com/project_1965_mercury_comet.htm)
Bob -- Thanks for posting the pic of your dash . . . it looks awesome. The gauge bezel that we're using is actually one from JME Enterprises that is made to fit the 65-66 Mustang. The 65 Comet dash shares the same dimensions, so we decided to use the JME pod. We'll be painting it a charcoal color and using these gauges from Classic Instruments:

Thanks, Wayne, for the comment on the gauges.
I have a question for everyone about the gauge pod . . . .
The regular finish of the face of the gauge pod is a brushed aluminum (see pics below, including a close up). The dash will be painted black. Which of the following options do you think we should do:
(1) Leave the gauge pod face brushed aluminum;
(2) Try to polish the face;
(3) Paint the face black to match the dash; or
(4) Paint the face a dark charcoal (sort of a color that is between the black of the dash and the grey color in the center of the gauges themselves)?
I've also include a picture of the power steering reservoir, just because it's shiny and nice.
Thanks,
Josh

My suggestion would be to get it all together with the dash painted, and then decide. I think I'd be going for the natural finish, or maybe the dark charcoal face.

I'm with Ed, wait til the dash is painted and then decide. Or maybe have the versions done in photoshop.
Will the charcoal or brushed aluminum be used elsewhere in the interior? If so,you can pick up on that to help keep things consistant.
Good luck on your decision!

Josh,
I would paint the gauge pod FACE black to match the dash. Picture how the chrome of the gauge bezels and pod rim would stand out. You're gonna have chrome heater controls on that black dash (at least, as I can see now), plus your polished aluminum steering column and its buttons. Just my opinion, but I think that contrast would look awesome!

John,
I'm looking for a set of tail light bezels for a 65 Comet. Better than driver quality. No gouges, scrapes, or dings. VERY MINOR pitting may be acceptable. I'm willing to pay what they are worth IF a return policy is included if I'm not satisfied. I will also consider either side alone if in my described condition.
Any help would be appreciated.
If any one else reading this thread can 'hook me up', that would be great too!

Thanks for everyone's comments.
I agree with Ed and Joe that it makes sense to wait until the dash is painted and then decide. We also had a call with the interior shop today, and it looks like we'll be able to wait to see how the interior goes before deciding what to do with the gauge pod color. We might be using some charcoal color mixed in with black in the interior and, if so, that will affect our decision on the gauge pod.
Bob -- I see what you're saying about the cool contrast if we paint the gauge pod face black. The only issue is that there is going to be A LOT of black in the interior (and exterior), and so a dark charcoal might be good option -- and there will still be a pretty stark contrast between the charcoal and the chrome/polished aluminum. Anyway, we'll wait until after paint/interior to decide.
John -- I don't think we need any Comet parts, but I'll keep it in mind if we do going forward. And, looks like you should talk to Bob in case you have the parts he's looking for.
Finally, a couple of quick updates that I'd like to get people's views on:
1. We're going to go with a synthetic leather -- "Allante" (sp?) -- for most of the seat coverings, door panels, etc. We also plan to use some real leather inserts in the interior, but the vast majority will be synthetic. Everything I've seen is that the synthetic leather available today is much more durable than leather (and so its look holds up over time) and that you really can't tell a difference from real leather.
2. We're not going to have any dome light -- just lights under the dash, in the doors, and in the rear seat area.
3. We're planning on having a console that runs to the back of the front seats (possibily with an adjustable arm rest). The rear seat will stay as a bench (three across), but it will be re-shaped so that there is a feel of two seats in the back (although someone could still sit in the center rear seat if needed).
4. I took the plunge and ordered billet hood hinges from Ring Brothers. They arrived at my house, so I had a chance to look at them before shipping them off to Woody's. These things are a work of art. Sorry I didn't take a photo of them, but I'll post one as soon as they are installed in the Comet. And, thanks to Larry Callahan for his review of these hinges -- it definitely helped me decide to get them! The link to his review is:

I guess that's it for now. I'll post more pics when I get them.

Yep, I live in Maryland (Bel Air) and I have observed that you are in 'northern' Virginia - exactally where?
I'm really anxious to see your car in person when you are ready. As I have posted before, "Miss Daisy" is not the quality of car that you are turning out, but for a 'shade tree' project I am quite proud of her.
Have you went to my website and looked at the restoration pictures? I don't have as many as you do, but they pretty much tell the story.

Bob -- I live in Alexandria, and it will be cool to see the two Comets together (although they will look like a bumble bee side-by-side). I spent a good amount of time on your site and the build pics were great . . . Miss Daisy is a sweet ride for sure. If you're interested in another '65 Comet build site, check out George's site at www.1965comet.net (http://www.1965comet.net) . . . maybe you've seen it already, but, if not, it's got some great pics. Anyway, my Comet is scheduled to be finished and delivered on May 3, so it will see a lot of road time this spring/summer.
Craig -- I'll defintely send you some pics or I'll ask Chris Sondles at Woody's to do so . . . Woody's seems to be putting an AME chassis on every full build that they do! I'm not sure if you went out with Art to see the Buckaroo build-off cars that Woody's was building last spring, but they seem to have turned out really great.

Hey Josh,
I'm sure May 3d won't get here soon enough for you! I'm looking forward to a get together.
George's web site (George Teding) is where I found out about this Pro-Touring site. He's from San Diego. He started out with the exact same Comet as mine, right down to the colors. He definitely ran in to some major rust issues but did a great job of repairing them. My car came from north/east Louisiana and had NO rust. George and I have swapped many emails - I have sent him 'tons' of pictures of my restoration, more detailed than what I have on my site to help him out. My car has inspired him to get his finished (it's been work in progress for a long time). He asked me back in October if I would mind him using some of my mods, and I told him to go for it. He has my web site in his 'Daily Log' link, where he decided to do away with his ashtray after he saw my dash.
His site and your car on Woodys' site are two of my daily stops..
Take care - come on Spring!

is that a flat black paint or bed liner material?
For the dash, it is flat black (we were going to go with glossy to match the exterior, but we changed course right before the painting began as we decided that the flat black would look better for the interior and also be a nice contrast to the exterior).
For the inside of the trunk, it is Lizard Skin that you're seeing now.
And, for the frame, it's powdercoating.

Krashy- Looking at that frame I still don't see any body mount brackets or anything. Could you maybe take some shots of those areas on the frame? I am still very interested in knowing how they did it. I have another idea in my head but it is more complicated than my first idea and I would like to see other ways of doing this especially if they are easier. Thanks Chris

We decided to go with a dark charcoal for the face of the gauge pod. Some update pics of the gauge pod, wheels, and chassis/engine are below. Thx, Josh

Not sure what it would cost to regular spray, but it was $600 to powdercoat.

Not bad $600, did that include more than just the frame?

Hi Josh,
You went with my second choice. I'll live with that! LOL
Keep that ball rolling!
Bob

Thanks,
Josh

Josh:
Do you have any detail pics of how the tranni was mounted. I am still trying to figure out how I am going to fabricate the mounts for my T45 on my Art Morrison Chassis.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Chris:
Also check the Art Morrison catalog. They have universal body mount kits if you don't want to fabricate something. Page 23

Hey Bob. You know, I actually thought about that when I was talking with the shop about the color choice! And, it was a pretty close call between black and charcoal. In fact, we decided to go with charcoal but also want to see how it looks once the interior is done -- it will not be a big deal to change it to black at that time if the charcoal doesn't look good. I think (hope) that the charcoal, with the flat black dash and the dark grey parts of the interior, will look pretty nifty. We'll see! Thanks, Josh

There should be a pic in that post (there is on my screen), although I think it helps more with the tranny question than the body mounts -- and it would be a great pic if anyone had a question about the motor mounts, lol. Thx, J
