David,
I would invest in some fiberglass cloth, resin, and some aluminum tape. Run the tape on the top side of the gap, and do the repair with the cloth and resin. Once dry fiberglass fill, sand, and finish! Done quick and easy!! Hope this helps!

No start with fiberglass mat it is heavier. Use it for your basic shaping then follow up with the cloth. Cloth is made more for finish work do to the way it is woven it is not nearly as stong. Alot of people don't realize that until they actually see them side by side. You should really reinforce the back side by going 1-2" past the crack do this by gradually beveling the good area. Card board also makes a nice quick template material to form a new piece on. You can just soak in water for a few days to remove after your part has set up.
