View Full Version : Stupid question about LSX engines.....

I notice that most, if not all, people who put LSX engines in their cars talk about what kind of gas tank they are going to run. Do you have to run a special type of gas tank with an LSX or can you still use a stock tank and electric fuel pump?

This is essentially what's keeping me on the fence about getting one fo these engines. I'm really not interested in dropping 6 bones on a new tank.

I don't have an LS1 but I have been running an injected engine in my car for 6 years now. I thought that I could get away with a sumped stock tank and a external fuel pump, but I have gotten nothing but vapor locking and starvation problems. I just threw in the towel and bought a tank from Rick. My engine needs the huge SX pump, and they are the only ones that build them into the tank.

If you buy a new stock tank, and get a junk yard injected tank you could build a nice tank that would work with an LS1. That could be done for less than 6 hun (thats a low estimate for a stainless tank BTW)

You also needs baffles around the pump or pickup to prevent starvation. The electric pumps also need the gasoline around them for cooling.

I have heard about people running often with low levels of gas in their tanks and burning pumps because of overheating.

That is also the reason why the PCM shuts down the pump after e few seconds if it doesn't detect crank movement.

Just run an external Aeromotive pump. Then you can keep your stock tank.

True? Do you other guys concur? Is anyone else here running an LSX with a stock tank?

all i know is that you need a return line tapped into your tank. i am waiting for funds still to do the swap.

The LSx is no different than any other EFI engine. You don't want to run an external pump with a stock tank. I tried it and it does not work

Well then to hell with the LSX stuff. I don't need the hassle.
