View Full Version : Tuning the brake bias knob?

I've got a 69 camaro that I recently replaced the dynalite kit on the front with a wilwood 6 piston superlite. The car stops much better, but after doing a few panic stops in an open parking area i noticed the front tires would lock up and leave black marks.
Upon checking the bias knob the shop had turned it all the way to the front disc. I run 11 inch drums in the rear.
I've backed it off 1 1/2 turns, but I'm curious at what point is the tuning correct for the bias?

As much pressure to the rear as possible w/o locking the rears. Locking the rears will make the back end come around. Test this at various speeds and if you have more of a race compound pad make sure the pads are hot when you test. I thought mine was dialed in right. Then a panic stop @ 70 mph on the freeway changed my mind. Now it works right all the time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've usually heard it and I've done it this way. Just measure how many turns are available in the prop valve by going "lock to lock." Then divide that number by two to get the "center point." This should be a good starting point, but the rears might still lock up before the front. Now just go into a large open area where you can gain a reasonable amount of speed and try some panic stops. You should try them at different speeds to fine tune. Start with like 30mph and then 40mph, 50, etc. etc. It'll be tuned when the rears have begun to lock up just after the fronts. By the way, this wont necessarily happen but be prepared for some back-end whip arounds, especially at higher speeds. Enjoy.

they also make a pressure gauge you can screw into the bleeders and check the pressure , we have two ,one in front and one in back you step on the pedal and start with about 40lbs more in front ( you'll need a couple of people). You have to do alittle testing to get it right . If you want to go too far with it you can also buy a gauge panel and mount it in the car . the" lock to lock" does work but it depends on how its set up at first.:drive2:
