I swapped out the points, rotor, distributor cap, and coil. The car ran well before the swap. I did not touch the timing at all. I can only get the car to start very roughly with the distributor wire on the + terminal of the coil. Do I have the coil hooked up properly.

No, the wire from the dist connects to the coil -.
The coil + wire comes from the ign switch.

If your point gap or dwell is off, the timing will be off. 1 deg of distributor dwell equals 2 degrees of timing at the crank, so set your dwell very carefully.

Most good auto part stores will still have analog dwell meters. The little window on the side of the distributor gives you access to the points in order to adjust the dwell. Damn I am getting old...

Thak you guys. The problem was all of my making, I overlooked the fact that I did not by a uni-set points set. So I had no condenser, so no chance of it starting. I corrected that problem and now it runs great. By the way I was using the "old" analog dwell metter, it's my dads.
