The 572 was delivered tonight! The engine is a piece of art, way too nice to get dirty on the Power Tour. We're ready to install it in my '70, but are waiting on a pair of tall-deck headers that are delayed at JetHot. If we don't get them by next weekend, we'll have to forego the 572 and stick with the 454 for the Tour. Here's a pic, just disregard the goofball standing next to the engine........

Looks great. Does the 572 use the same pan as the 502? YOu may have to change that to fit it into your 70, but you probably know that already.

Thanks Andrew, yeah the stock pan won't work. I have a new Moroso pan, pump and pickup sitting in the garage.

Nice!! Join the family! What kind of MPG do you think we'll be able to knock down on the tour?

AWESOME intake! If I can get everything installed I'll be running the stock 850 Demon carb on the Tour. With my 5spd, I'm hoping for 10-12mpg. Last year my dual-quad 454 averaged 15.5 on the Tour with a best of 18mpg. You should see 3-5mpg better than me due to the EFI.
What brand headers are you going to use?

Sweet, I was hoping to get at least 15MPG, as long as I can stay out of it!! I swapped out my 15 gallon cell for a 20 gallon one to increase my range.
As far as headers, thats still up in the air, I've been working with a major header manufacturer on a prototype design, and I'm having fitment issues. I'm at the point now where I cant wait any longer, and may just have to have them custom made.

That is awesome! But a small part of me says "crate motor/ Schmate motor". I guess that small part is my "brain". Ha Ha!
All seriousness- That is one hell of an engine, congrats!

sorry to interupt this thread (love the 572 btw) but protouring72 are you going to run those BFG KD's on the tour? If so then I would like to know how they work on wet pavement at highway speeds. I have heard they are pretty slippery. I am running the same tires on my 68 coupe so I was just wondering.

good for the wow factor... LOL! No worries, the subframes are completely tied together. My car once had a ladder bar rear suspension, so everything's welded and there are braces/crossmembers galore!
I agree on the wow factor, but it would've been a helluva lot cheaper if I had just painted my steel heads with aluminum paint and picked up some 572 valve covers! :hand:

What a nice piece. I've got a 502 Ram Jet being delivered tomorrow. The only problem is that being in Afghanistan means my wife will have to take pics for me...virtual excitement!!! This car is still going together, but will be running a TKO 600 (already on hand). What kind of clutch are you using, and how do you like the TKO with BBC setup? Thanks.

Hey Tom, The 502 RamJet will be sweet! I'm currently running a Centerforce dual friction clutch with the stock mechanical linkage. The TKO/BBC combo works VERY well. I couldn't be more pleased. We'll see how the TKO handles the 572........... I see a TKO-600 in my future. :naughty:

Are the dynatech tall deck headers are a drag race part? Do they exit the fenderwell or hang real low?

Thanks for the info...I ordered the Center Force DF just a few days ago...with a Mcleod Scattershield. So it'll pretty much be the same as your old setup. What gear are you running out back. I've got 3:42's...am hoping that the torque of the 502 and the 1st gear of the TKO 600 will work well with it. Your thoughts?

Well I wish the news was good, but it's not. Nothing tragic, I'm just still waiting on my tall deck headers, which at this point are on back order until early June. So I'll be sticking with the tried-n-true 454 for the Power Tour.
On a brighter note I got my dual 11" Spal fans and DCC fan controller installed today. That controller is killer!

It figures, I received the headers today, one freakin' week before leaving on the Power Tour.
If I had received them last week I might have had a chance to get the 572 installed, but
unfortunately time is too short now. :crying: :banghead: :crying: :banghead: :crying:

I'm taking my time and at this rate it'll take me 6 months to get it installed, but I finally made some progress on the 572. I got the Moroso oil pan/pump/pickup installed. Also test fit the Dynatech headers with the pan, mini starter and dipstick. No fitment issues so far. The headers are so "purdy" I just had to share a couple pics.

Dan, Very, Very NICE. What do you have holding the chassis together? i.e. sub-frame connectors, rollcage... With all of that torque I can just see the rear end spinning like a propeller on a rubberband power toy plane!

Thanks Rybar & tomspo04! I made some more progress this weekend by pulling the existing 454, TKO, exhaust, etc. I need to do a little clean up under the hood and install the hydraulic clutch assembly, but should be shoehorning the 572 in very soon!

tomspo04, my Nova has welded in sub-frame connectors. It also has a tubular ladder bar crossmember welded between them (left over from the bracket racing days when it had ladder bars), so it's tied together pretty well. I considered picking up a pair of drag radials to see what she'd really do on the track, but figure my TKO-I (only rated for 500lb/ft torque) wouldn't appreciate that. So, I'm just going to have to baby it on the track and try to keep it off the wall. :drive1:

Dan You may have already mentioned, but if you don't mind me asking, what kind of cltuch are you running? I see the TKO sitting on the floor under the 8V92...I mean 572.:jump: Aside from a hundfred or so horse, my set up is similier to yours. I get home in about a week and will start hooking the 502RJ to the TKO600. I'll pick up the body around the middle of the month.

Tomspo04, I'm running a Centerforce dual-friction clutch/pp/flywheel. I was running mechanical clutch linkage with the 454, but will be using a hydraulic set up with the 572. Unlike your 502, the 572 does have a pivot-ball provision on the block for the z-bar. However with the tall-deck headers I have, the #5 tube runs right in front of the pivot-ball location, so I can't use the mechanical linkage. I picked up a hydraulic conversion kit from Classic Chevy 5-Speed.

Im wondering if youve got your 572 in your car yet , Ive been told it sits alot higher . If you can tell me I'd really like to know how much higher in inches for hood clearance . Im thinking about this engine for a 1968 SS Camaro . And maybe you already know without installing it . I sold this 1970 Nova to go to a 68 Camaro for a change . Thanks Jerry

Yes, I've had the 572 installed for ~10 months now. The block is a tall deck which is 0.4" taller than a non-tall deck block. I have the factory intake, running a 4" air cleaner (with 1.5" drop base) and a 2" Goodmark cowl hood. I have ~1.5" clearance between the top of the air cleaner and the hood.
