View Full Version : Why won't my spindle go on my LCA???

So, I was assembling the front suspension today so that I could get a roller to hit the welding and body shops.

I ran into a road-block that I didn't really expect. See pics!

The LCA is a Detroit Speed piece, the TEMPORARY spindle is my old/original one from the power drum brakes. Yup, 4 wheel power drums.

Anyway, in the pic you can see how the brake backing plate is making contact with the LCA and I can't get the darn spindle in place.

I've not heard or read of anyone else having this happen so I'm pretty much feeling like an idiot here. :)

I'm trying to separate the backing place from the spindle but there's a large nut that my air gun just wouldn't get off! Gonna need persuasion I guess, thus my time-out to come ask you guys if this has happened to anyone else.

Isn't the spindle upside down? The cylinder thinger for the pads should be at the bottom not the top or am I on crack?

I would guess it is the drum brakes. No it is not upside down.

Just take the backing plate off and mount the hub alone.... and you got it rolling again.

Also-
The big nut on the upper spindle boss holding the backing plate on, has 2 small tabs that are bent up against the nut to prevent turning. Make sure to flatten those tabs so your air gun can back it out. Without doing that small item, no air gun could pop it off.

Thanks guys.

Matt, I think you're on crack. :) j/k. The cylinder goes on top.

So far, I couldn't get the backing plate off. There's this one big nut that I couldn't break loose yet. (the one TJ mentioned)
BTW, TJ was right about those two little bent up tabs over the nut. I did knock those down. They are very much like some nuts on my sportbike so they caught my eye pretty quickly.

The other little dilemma, not seen in the picture exactly, is that there is another 'arm' that I did get off the backing plate. It is the Tie-Rod attaching point! In other words, I think really need this backing plate for now! :)

Maybe I should "clearance" the plate with my little whiz wheel. heheheh. I do like clearancing things. That seems like my only option.
I'm just baffled as to how having a drum spindle keeps me from getting it on the LCA. Too bad I sold my old LCA, I could do a quick comparison.

maybe I need some heat on that big nut..... I do like the propane torch.

usually you can push the ball joint all the way tilted outwards then angle the spindle in then wiggle it on, but im guessing the DSE arm is wider in that area. Im with Tom cut that frogger off!!
