OK guys, here a few probably "dumb" questions, but I have to ask as I am pretty new to all this:

1) what is the best brand and type of gaskets (header, intake, valve covers, fuel pump block off, etc...)

2) can I put the heads from my rebuilt 327 onto the GM 350/290 and swap out the cam also? The heads on my 327 have a lot of work in them and if I can swap them I think I could make more power if I can swap the cam and heads. What things do I need to check/be aware of if I can make this swap?

3) are there any lightened high quality flywheels available for 350 to mate it to my 4 speed saginaw?

I've only used Felpro gaskets, and have had good luck with them. The heads from your 327 will work on the 350; any idea on what size chambers they are? You'll probably get a boost in compression, since I'm fairly sure the 290hp motor has 76cc heads on it. The 327 heads are probably 68cc or thereabouts. Depending on what headgasket you use, you could wind up in the 9.5:1 range, perfectly acceptable on pumpgas.

Does your block have a 1-piece rear main seal? If so, I know GM makes a nodular iron 15lb. flywheel for that one; not sure if they make one for the older 2-piece rear main.

Thanks for the reply's, I appreciate the info. I should hopefully get the new engine ordered tomorrow and have her up and running again by mid next week.

1) Best intake/head/internal gaskets are Fel Pro. I reccomend the 1003 for head gaskets and the 1256 (I think) for intake.
Earl's make the best header gaskets with thier pressure master series. Basically a steel gasket with soft inserts that go against the ports

3) Fidanza makes good quality Aluminum Flywheels for Chevy http://www.fidanza.com/
I reccomend the 10.4" to really save weight, with new clutch materials out now (Kevlar-Metallic) lack of grip is no longer an issue.
