Don't tell me these things.. lol.. I just found that you can get an '04 with under 10k miles on it for about $20k!! (with a six-speed).. I can't tell you how tempting that is compared to a '99 Vette with over 60k miles.. GTO's are the bargin deal these days..

My buddy in San Diego is telling me new ones are going for $28k-$29k. I don't like the C5 vettes so much. I love all the other ones though. One of my brain childs was to get a C4, do LSX, 6 speed, Callaway body kit (done by them for $6000 or whatever it was, i forget now), and 4 square borla center exaust tips.

Did I mention I got over 100mph two or three times? :drive: :hail: :ssst:

My poor man GTO (new name old idea) is LSX + 6 speed into a 2+2 1990-1996 300zx.

I'm having a blast with mine. Quiet, no rattles, super comfortable to drive. Of course I modded mine a bit. :rotfl:

I did the install and tuning. It's a kit from an Australian company.

Steve,

They're Budniks. The car handles very well for 3700 pounds. Most enjoyable car to drive I've owned. Not the fastest, but just does everything well.

The install wasn't hard but was time consuming. I doubt it'd fit in a first gen, and affordable.........:) it's a bit pricey at $8995. But quality is outstanding, and air temps are crazy low.

Now there is a new twin turbo kit coming out that has the turbos up top and is going to be in the $4500. range complete. Good to 700 crank hp max, but plenty for most people.

I have wanted a GTO for a while now... and for $4500 + $20k for the car... SO tempting. You can barely even buy a P-1SC for that kind of money!

What size tire did you get in there? Is it an auto or stick?

I remember seeing a race in Australia where a raced out Holden Monaro was spanking a Ferrari 355. The Ferrari would keep up in the straights, but couldn't hang in the turns for some reason.

I'm running 285-18 drag radials in the rear and a 245 up front. This one is an auto specifically for the turbos.

The new gto got a bum rap from all the number matching types because it did not have a powerglide, quadrajet and 4 wheel drums. Consumer Reports does not like it either, but thats because Ralph Nader is their editor.

No the "TRUE GTO" fans HATE it because it looks like a ricer. GM didn't even attempt retro styling like Ford and Dodge. That being said I drove my buddy's car and it is an awesome drive and the interior is the best I've ever seen in a GM car. But the styling still sucks, if the rumored 08 has a retro style, I will defintely be the first to buy one.

I don't even care about retro styling. I do agree that the GTO is pretty bland, and I appreciate all of this retro styling... but if I wanted a retro car... I would go and buy one. From that era. I like how the new Camaro incorporated a little retro here and there - but it isn’t in your face like the Challenger.

The only real competitor for the GTO is the Mustang and I already have a '67 so there's no point to get the new one. I would say slick vs. boring for the GTO. Its not in your face. They look great with the HSV wing like my local dealer put on.

I don't think it looks like a "ricer" at all, in fact most complaints are that it is too bland; which is the opposite of a ricer. THe reason they couldn't make it look like the old GTO is becuase the car had already been in production for years in AUS, to totally change the look would cost a fortune. Also if you think back to the first GTO, it too was quite bland on the outside, really just a lemans with a big motor and suspension parts

I dont beleive you'll have to worry about a 08 . Gm announced that there will be no more GTO's made

When the GTO returned in 04 it was announced it would have a three year run, which just ended. This is nothing new, it was planned from the beginning. Do not be surprised to see another new GTO on a different platform. That was the plan from the beginning.

Isn't the 08 supposed to be on the same platform as the new Camaro? I thought I read that instead of bringing back the Firebird the Pontiac version of the Camaro would be the GTO.

Consumer Reports is a farce. My cousin's friend works there and she says they all drive Japanese and German cars.

Yeah....no bias going on there.:bsjerk:

That is the plan. Same platform, but the GTO will be a little nicer/plush than the Camaro.

my friends 06 GTO skips like a speed boat! damn thing will make you sea sick. it rocks and rolls ftont to back. suspension travel is a mile long. that and you can KO someone with an elbow shifting from first to second because the gear throws are so damn long. all in all. im not to impressed with it. seats are nice. i just dont like all the right had drive touches that are still in it. like the volume knob being on the passenger side of the car...

Weird, my 05 was one of the nicest riding cars I've ever owned.

Hi jody,

what kind of power does it make with your setup?

Hi jody,

No longer own the car. Never dynoed it, but the engine and turbo setup was good for 1000 HP or so. Problem was the maf was pegged at a pretty low boost level and the tuning became sketchy at that point. Of course right after I sold it they came out with mafless boosted tuning for the LS2's! :machine:

Yes the GTO came in at a slow rate but GM also had several comanies step up and say that they would push/provide GTO/GTO related parts and the push never came. According to a friend who works for Pontiac told me that one of the companies was supposed to mod the car kind of like ASC did on drop top Cavs and Camaros. but they just closed up and tada no extra parts for GTO's.
supposedly they had a complete line of "performance" parts in the works and boom no supplier, so I think Eibach made some springs and some other companies whipped up some sway bars etc.
But heck if it doesnt make a hit it doesnt.
But for what they are everyone wanted a barn stormer out of the box but you gotta figure the first GTO's were just add on packages to a Tempest. If people would just appreciate something for whay it is and see POTENTIAL and not expect everything to come from GM,Ford or etc, built to win the NHRA nationals or INDY 500 on the first year.
Look at 82 Camaros they rode like crap ,drove like crap, couldnt out run a snail and were just plain clunky but look where they ended up, an awesome line to a generation of Pony cars that many still drive, beat on and modify.
I hear so many people say its this or its that but hey GM brought us a platform that had what we wanted but then we as a performance community let hem fall by the way side. And we wonder why so many great ideas never make it to production, SSRs everyone wnated them but they never really made a mind blowing splash, Syclone/Typhoon, awesome products but only had a limited niche following yet one of the most mind blowing setups ever produced.
Seems to me everyone wants new /old/fast/cornering/cute/bad ass/etc all in one but when we get something cool we never follow through completely.
Seems if it handles bad we try to amake it handle better, if its slow lets hop it up , if its not pretty let spruce it up.
Puh-Lese, its an awesome platform and now its gonna be gone and we will whine about not having a GM platform to hot rod (till the Camaro comes out) well ok some of us as a community will.
We icant afford 20 k car so Ill keep working on my old stuff.

I agree, I got to drive my aunt's '04 Goat for a couple of days recently and I was VERY impressed. Even though it had the 4L60E, it was still snappy and fun to drive. The handling is superb. I was totally picturing all the stuff i would do to mine if I had one. Namely, a Procharger and different wheels and tires, and go from there. The only thing I wish you could do is delete some of those factory options. There is just too much new-fangled doo-hickery on these things. That's ok though as long as it all keeps working and I don't end up with a bunch of broken electronic gizmos in a few years.

These things are indeed a tremendous performance bargain and at least for now, there is a huge choice of aftermarket upgrades, as much as you want to spend. And the naysayers can't poo-poo a GTO that is faster and handles way better than any previous goat ever did.

The great thing is, my wife drove it too and loved it, so maybe there will be a "new" GTO in our future!!

They styleing on hte GTO's makes me puke. No one can dispute the performance but the looks... :barf:

The only thing stylish being produced by GM right now is the C6. Wish they wouldn't be so conservative.

EDIT: The Caddilac CTS is also a not so conservative desgin that I like.

Co-worker purchased an 06, black, 6-speed, 30k out the door. That seems like a deal to me.
