Has anyone else been out to take pictures of their car yet? Me and a buddy went out yesterday in downtown Jacksonville and got a bunch of good pictures.

Just make sure you guys follow the guidelines (the dawn or dusk deal).. the pile of swag is pretty cool this year.. :)
Also, you can use the tips in the story to send me kick butt Hometown pics as well. And those pics can be taken any time of day..

Yeah mine are at dusk. We did three diffrent locations. The first is on the river front and is just ok. The second we found this awsome painting on the side of a building. Its a city street so my car kinda looks like its a part of it. The last we were on the top of an garage. These are probly the ones you guys will like the best. Steve maby I could send two or three and you could critique them?

That wouldn't be fair to the others entering.. however.. there is nothing wrong with posting them online and asking the general public to critique them :)
If you follow the tips in the story there is no reason you can't win. The guy who won last year has been practicing so he could try for a repeat win.. most of all have fun.

I would say more light on the wheels.. either with a reflector (if it's a fast shutter speed) or with a flashlight (if it's a slow shutter speed)
Another trick, if you are shooting a long exposure, is to have someone in the car, laying down, and have them turn on and off the headlights once fairly quickly. This makes them look on in the photo without blowing out the image like it would if you just had them on during a slow shutter pic.

Thanks. The first was one friend just playing around in a shopping mall parking lot for fun/practice. The second is from the friend that helped me yesterday. He took it while driving about 45 or 50mph. That one is my computer background.

The first one the car gets lost in the shot. It is way too busy. What is the focus here?
The second and the previous stand alone one are to blue. If you look at the pic as a whole, it has a bluish quality. A filter or longer exposure can help here.

What's the general concensus of having the subject not level in the photo? I see it quite a bit now, and it drives me insane. I HATE it.
It's just as bad as those TV shows that purposely have the cameras unsteady. The most drunk I've ever been my damn head wasn't that wobbly.

Slownova...the car looks fantastic, the tree growing out of the hood and the light pole out of the roof don't look so hot. It's too bad that damn tree got in way, I like the first shot otherwise.

It makes the photo less static and well.. boring.. a SLIGHT tilt of the camera can make the same image more dynamic.
Also.. use the rule of thirds and try to not stick your subject dead center in the picture. In video I would agree that it makes you sea sick but in still photog I like it (so long as the angle is not too extreem)

Andrew, those pics are great. There is some cropping that I'm not sure what I think of, but overall those are some great shots.
I like how the uber colorful background contrasts the stark white of your nova.
(again, I didn't see the rules in the last issue I picked up.. where are they)

andrew what kind of camera are you using??
Muthstryker... it was shot with a Nikon D50, exif data doesn't have the lens, but I'd bet it was the 18-70mm kit lens. Very good camera, with a very good kit lens.
your buddy didn't do much in the way of PS adjustments, I think he was selling himself short, because that is a great photo untouched, it would be stellar with a little editing.

Everyone thanks for the helpful ideas and tips. I'll show this to my buddy and we will se what we can come up with.
Thanks again.
Thanks man... I guess the place i usually buy mags was late on getting this one out, picked it up today. The tips that Johnny put in are really solid.
On the one you picked out I'd suggest messing with the fstop a bit to get a little more DOF(depth of field) out of it, use the bokeh (out of focus area) to your advantage a bit more.
And for those of you sending in digitals (as per the requirement) your camera exif data will tell what time you shot it at, and what date... so you can't fudge on the sunset/sunrise stuff.

IMHO the backgrounds are all very distracting on your photos sick speed... but I'm a bit of a perfectionist with photos.

Yeah try getting that past the owner......... my parents. It would have meant they could have not gone on vacation. Someone has to stay home and hold the fort down.

Gorgeous car, but I personally don't think the pics don't do much for it. No romance in 'em... reminds me of bad retro '80s Car Craft prostreet fairground pics. Get the car out of a painted parking lot, off a "prim and proper" drive, and out of the bright mid day light. Think coming home from street races just as the sun is rising, or think getting ready for street races just as the sun is heading down. Think mechanical, think project garage, think back alley, think illicit, think urban industrial, think rural road, think suburban industrial park.
It's all about image (no pun intended) and drama, know what I mean?
I'm still trying to figure out which of the cars at my disposal I'm going to go really crazy with shooting.
But in the mean time...
...anyone have any more entries?
...and here's some stuff to stoke your creative side :)

Thank you for the advice. Im just an amature so any help is much appreciated!
I just got the rear dropped just right and the stance is now perfect. I also took care of those pesky rear marker lights, and they are instaleld as well. I'm going to have to go scout out a few locations and I definately need to get shots at dusk instead of mid day.
