PM problems

I get this message after trying to send PM's:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function utf8_encode() in /home/virtual/site5/fst/var/www/html/forum/includes/class_mail.php on line 164

The PM's go through, but since I did not know this I tried to go back to the previous screen. When I tried this, all of the typing I had done was gone.

I emptied the PM box. Will this help?

Tried again today on a different computer. Same results.
