... How big of a hammer do you own?
Seriously the largest engine you can use without some serious fab work would need to be a small block variant.
The largest GM small block ever was a 400; that is were the term 406 comes from, as a 400 overbored .030 makes 406 cubic inches.
I have seen small blocks as big as 464, but realistically the biggest you can go on a budget (that will drop into an 85 Camaro) is 396
4.030 bore x 3.875 stroke

i would stick to a sbc, they are easy to fit if no mods, good choice of headers,i would use a 700r4,or 200r4.i would build a 434 with efi.

I agree a smallblock would be easier, and probably a better choice for this vehicle.
That being said Ive seen plenty of bigblocks in third gens. Lots of engine swap info over at thirdgen.org
