Attached are the latest pictures of my new Pro-Touring ride. I think it has all the requirements we deem necessary for a Pro-Touring car.

Roll cage, high HP engine (238HP Four cylinder), light weight (1850lbs), lowered suspension, Carrera springs, struts and shocks, 4 wheel independent suspension, Full bump steered front suspension, Big sway bars with heim joints, solid suspension bushings and joints, limited slip, 4 piston front/2 piston rear Wilwood disc brakes, Hydraulic 2 disc Quartermaster clutch, 5 speed competition transmission, 180MM 3.90 rear gear, Libra racing wheels, ATL fuel cell, Dual Holley fuel pumps, Full Halon fire system, Glass front fenders, the ability to pull over 1G in a corner and of course a license plate!

The only thing that concerns me is the lack of "BIG WHEELS and Tires" I hardly think 225/45-13 qualify. What do you think???

Your right, Older classic car.
suspension mods to increase turning ability.
Modified engine to increase acceleration.
Modified brakes to increase stopping ability.
etc etc...wheel size?? What they are wide and clear the bigger brakes right? I like it.
Now paint it silver and get a more comfortable interior and AC.

I have seen some 510's really tear it up in some NASA races. Damn that looks nice.

I love it. Small and agile. I would consider it protouring/gmachine if it wasn't a race car. But I'm easy, just add carpet and another seat and its in.

I also don't care about big wheels. The bigger they get, the more power you need to turn them.

I also like that the color scheme is a little different. Not the same blue white and red that I see on those race clones.

I like it and if the quick calculations are correct that would easily be a low 12 second car. It would eat most of us alive on a road track. I am sure I drove some very similar cars in GT4. :)

I am jealous. I hope to have my own 510 someday. Slap some interior in it, maybe some slightly bigger wheels and call it pro-touring or whatever you want. Awesome car.

This car started its race life in the early 70's. I have log books all the way back to the original SCCA log book in the 70's. The car has been vintage raced a lot since the late 80's.

The car has a "legal" L20B engine is heavily worked head. It will outrun the "legal" 2 liter 911's. It's the cheater 3 liter 911's that out horsepower the car on the long straights like the back straight at Road Atlanta.

I'm looking forward to the HSR Walter Mitty Challenge the last weekend of April at Road Atlanta. Always a crowded race with LOT'S of spectators. Should be fun! I may have both car's there if my race buddy/enduro co-driver Mark can make time to attend. Two cars means twice as much fun for both of us!

The car did run GT3 in the late 70's-early 80's.

I LOVE DATSUN 510s!!!! If I ever won the lotery I'd build an LS2 powered 510. I'd make it a driver. My first car was a 1978 Datsun 510 2 door 4-speed car and it was a blast. A lightweight little coupe with rear drive and a stick. That thing would actually lay some pretty good rubber! LOL!

drool.

I love 510s... that was the other car I was looking for when I bought my camaro. My buddy (that found me the camaro) had found me a 510 while I was on vacation in boston. I told him to buy it and I'd pay him as soon as I got back (was only 800 bucks, so i thought I'd won the lotto)... well I come back to find out that they made a 1980 510, and it was a horrid piece. So I sold it and wound up getting the camaro.... but I digress.. That's a very very cool car.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

It's posts like this that leave me kickin myself for selling my 510.

SR20DET............/cries

Too many toys, not enough space. Almost worth the trade: Livin in HB for space.

Almost.

My first racecar was a 510 – it was the most fun I had racing and the cheapest. When I got the car is was well used but very well sorted out, I just maintained it and raced it. The car let me focus on racing not wrenching and I got a ton of seat time. It took some races to sort me out but when I got the hang of it the car won me a lot of races and championships. The car is still racing, what a little champ – I hope you have as much fun with yours as I did with mine.
Oh as a side note, years after I sold the car I was cleaning out of the garage and found my spare BRE intake, I had forgotten that I had it. I made a couple of phone calls and sold it to a guy that was restoring an original BRE car that he located in Jamaica of all places.
Cheers

That's a cool little car. I'm not sure if I've ever seen one before, and I'm guessing if I did I confused it with a BMW 2002. Looks like a lot of fun!

Three more squares of the car. In all the years the car has raced it has never been wrecked. I certainly do not want to be the one to initiate that process!

The car is in very good condition and well sorted. It is certainly a lot less expensive car to race that the 66 Shelby.

Yeah I love classic Jap cars...Have you seen pics of early Toyota Celica's.....They closely resemble a camaro.....

I would of gotten either a Celica or a 510 if I didnt total out my old 99 Dodge Cummins and a Big Rig.....I'm now afraid of small cars..

Thats why I bought the car with the longest hood Chevy ever produced.... Can you guess??????

I just got off the phone with Mike. I told him he sux...lol
He is at Road Atlanta this weekend sorting out the Datsun.
He says things are going well and he is having a ball.
Therefore, since we can not be there too, let him know he sux.
BTW, he is shooting some video, so maybe we can "enjoy" it that way.

I went to Bob Sharp Motors in 1973 to buy a 510 and left with a 240Z. All through college I road rallied in a 510 - I love them.

Very nice car. There was a fellow who would show up at Lime Rock in a 510 and be very competitive in time trials.

Just returned from Hotlanta and the HSR Walter Mitty Challenge. I had a great time, the car ran good all weekend and I drove it on the trailer after the feature race late Sunday afternoon.

There were 8 510's at this race including a tube frame 510 with a BIG wing, BIG flares and a Mazda rotary engine. This car really hauled the groceries!!!!

The fastest 510 in group 3B was a car from NC that is or was painted like a BRE 510. I ran all 4 practice sessions on Thursday, the practice sessions on Friday, the 2 qualifying races on Saturday and the "All Japanese Car" Feature on Sunday and the final group 3B feature late Sunday afternoon.

I finished the "All Japanese Car" feature race in 15th place overall out of 25 total cars in the race and 2nd in class 3O. I finished the Group 3B feature race in 13th place overall out of 35 in class and 5th place in class 3O.

Group 3B included Porsche 911 and 914's, a fast as hell BMW 2002, one XKE, one 65 Mustang Coupe, Mazda's, a Pinto, Lotus Elans, Elva, 510's, Alfa's, 240A's and Datsun roadsters.

The Jag and the Mustang are now in this group if/when they meet the new FIA standards within HSR. Normally these cars run group 5 however HSR is "run what ya brung" so there were a lot of group 5 cars (my Shelby included) that still ran period parts/engines/brakes and were not competitive with the big boys with Brembo brakes, Jericho transmissions, Winston Cup dry sump motors, heavily modified suspensions etc. To run the FIA standards with a Mustang/Jag/Shelby etc you must have period brakes, period transmissions, 7 inch wheels, engine limit etc. This will make for better racing for those that have cars that want to run more than just HSR, remain period correct and be competitve.

The 510 is a ball to drive. Much different than the Shelby. Actually a much easier car to drive. The car has GOOD brakes, lots of power, no bump steer and turns in very good. Considering I ran all weekend (10 sessions) on the same OLD Hoosiers that came with the car I am very pleased. The car is completely different drive than the Shelby as you go MUCH deeper in the turns since the car will actually stop and turn. The power in the car is superb as it pulled several 240Z's on the back straight and those cars have 6 cylinders! I will continue to learn to go deeper and faster into the corners. New tires will certainly help my confidence. It is still a little un-nerving doing the tail out dirt track driving coming down the BIG hill after the bridge to the front straight since the big sweeper is downhill big time and off camber! I also need to drive must further and faster into turn 1as it still a great place to pass! I also like the turn 5 and the back straight for passing.

All in all a good weekend. Not very much stuff got tore up. A stock car lost it Sunday afternoon coming down the hill after the bridge and lost it under the start/finish tower spinning and hitting the wall. An 85 GTU Corvette backed it into a wall and there were a few "rubbing" incidents. Nobody was injured.

A funny thing DID happen during the last feature race I ran late Sunday afternoon. During the warm up lap following the pace car a 911 Porsche 2 cars in front of me was weaving to warm his tires and not paying attention and damn near ran into the car in front of him as we slowed for turn 5. He spun the car around and the car in front of me almost hit him head on! We were no going fast however you are not supposed to loop it on the pace lap!!!! Charley, the chief steward, did have a conversation with him after the race! He did rejoin the race and gridded in his proper position. I have not looked at the video yet however it should be on my video camera was in the car and on!

This was a lot of fun! Maybe the "ricer's" really are onto something? Can we say "Drifting" next????
