I was wondering if any of ya'll have ever heard of an eighteenwheeler turbo being used on a regular big or small block chevy. If this would work it would probably be a cheaper alternative to buying a new one. also what about a turbo from a powerstroke or duramax. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Garret TV81 turbo from a Detroit diesel here.

The powerstroke turbos are popular with the 5.0 mustang guys, but may be a bit small for say a 383 stroker.
Just keep in mind that the big rig turbos have quite large turbine a/r's, so they will spool up pretty slow. I'm lucky that mine is popular and I can get a/r's down to .96(mine is a 1.36 now)

I don't know about the Duramax turbos, but alot of people are making good (600ishRWHP) with the Powerstroke turbo for a single. Or twin 6.5 Chebby turbo's on a larger engine.

I am sure it could be made to work, but there will be some issues getting to fit. The tubing is six inches in diameter. These are big turbos. I bought one for my big truck last year and it was $1300 just for the turbo. They also take forever to spool up. Well compared to the smaller ones. One note on the truck turbo is that I can get up to 35 lbs of boost from the thing.

here's a link on how to do it up right with a big rig turbo. (http://www.highperformancepontiac.com/tech/0309pon_turbo/)

DCx posted this back in september in this (http://66.70.234.198/forum/showthread.php?t=1307&highlight=turbo) thread.

if you had a big enough engine wouldn't the big rig turbo spool up pretty quickly beings a big rig engine only revs to 3 grand or somewhere in there. or is this not how it works.

The turbines on the diesel turbos(Detroit, etc) are just frickin huge. A good a/r for our use is around .96, but the turbo i have has a 1.36 a/r which is gonna spool substantially slower.

A semi turbo would have terrible turbo lag. You would have to gett the turbo spooling for it to build boost. which in a big turbo would take a lot of exhaust

And the results so far...http://www.turbomustangs.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28845
These are semi truck turbo numbers installed on a 355 chevy. The turbo he is using now is sized very similar to the one I am using. The Powerstroke and Duramax turbos are substantially smaller.
