Went to see "The Worlds Fastest Indian" last night.
If you haven't heard about it, it's about Burt Munro who was a New Zelander who races a 1920 (I think) Indian at Bonneville in the 60's. He set a record there in 67 that still stands today for a streamliner motorcycle under 1000cc.
Fantastic collection of old street cars in the flick, but the real thrill was seeing some of the old lakes racers like Mickey Thompsons Challenger, Cachephus, The Pumpkin Seed etc.
Great flick about a really cool old hot rodder.

I must give this a great rating as well. Not only was all the old cars cool to see but Anthony Hopkins plays a great roll. You totally get caught up in the movie. Next thing you know, it's 2 hours later and it's over. Even my girlfriend, who typically falls asleep during movies, was awake all the way through. LOL
Can't wait for it on DVD!

...he was a true hotrodder.
I dunno how accurate the site is but here are a few snips from: http://www.indianmotorbikes.com/features/munro/munro.htm
Burt began modifying his bike in 1926. His methods, to say the least, were unorthodox. He used an old spoke for a micrometer and cast parts in old tins although one American report has him casting pistons in holes in the sand at the local beach! He built his own four-cam design to replace the standard two-cam system and converted to overhead valves.
He made his own barrels, flywheels, pistons, cams and followers and lubrication system. In their final form he in effect hand-carved his con-rods from a Caterpillar tractor axle, and hardened and tempered them to 143 tons tensile strength. He built a seventeen plate, thousand pound pressure clutch and used a triple chain drive. He experimented with streamlining and, in its final form, the bike was completely enclosed in a streamlined shell. The leaf-sprung fork was dispensed with and what appears to be a girder fork from a 1925 - 1928 Prince substituted.
Rumor has it that Burt made his barrels from pieces of cast iron gas pipe, which he scrounged from the gas company after they had been dug up for replacement.
He reasoned that, after some years in the ground, they were well seasoned. He then made aluminum slices which he shrunk over the pipe to make fins.

The movie was actually toned down from what the real Burt Munroe was all about.
The cat in the movie that made question about Burt's tires while misdirecting his way through tech inspection... is in my club... as are quite a few others that were there that day (his first time out.)
All I can say is that there are some stories that you wouldnt even comprehend... that dude was a straight up pimp horn dog.

That movie is a testiment to what most kiwis are about. We have what we call "the number 8 wire" therory, anything can be fixed with some number 8 wire, hehehe.
Thats why so many kiwis do so well in car building/motorsport scenes over there.
Anyway its good to see you guys can have a bit of insight to new zealand.
