Not sure where to put this - gasable silicone?

Ok, not sure exactly where this should go, but I got a q for those who are smarter than I (almost everyone!).
In my 58 where the gas filler neck is. there is an o ring there and it is now leaking when I put alot of gas in it and also when I go around a corner it leaks out. It is the absolute biggest PITA to get in and out. So what I am wondering is, is there a type of sealant that I can put around the outside of the neck/tank to seal the thing? I know that regular silicone will not work with gas, but is there something else that I can use short of JB welding it together?

jb weld probably wouldnt work, the joint would flex and and the epoxy would crack. i thought permatex ultra black (the stuff that actually looks dark grey when it comes out) was gas compatible, i may be wrong though. they also make a super hitemp gasket maker that is like 15 dollars a can (pressurized) and im pretty damn sure that will work with anything. napa carries both, i know, i used to sell both products.

Silicone is really bad near gas.
How about a new O ring?
If possible can you slip a piece of large neoprene hose over the connection and put hose clamps on each side?

You won't want to hear this but.....my Nomad has the same set up. Replace the O-ring after you clean the tank and the filler neck real good. That's a common condition and most people do what you did - try not to fill it to the top. For what it's worth when I replaced it I DID put a little black silicone around the ring in case there was pitting. That was 5 years ago and it's been fine since.

There is an aircraft fuel sealant you can buy call MIL 8802-B 1/2. It is pliable and fuel proof, very nasty. It has a 1/2 hour work time, requires overnight to set up, and 3 days to full cure. Excellent stuff. If you have a hard time finding it let me know and I will find you a source.

Thanks for the info. I pulled the tank last year and cleaned it, that is how I know it is a PITA to mess with! I just used a rubber O-ring that I had to replace what was original. What year is your Nomad?

Any (decent) auto parts store will carry Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket, Part #3H, which works on gasket surfaces exposed to gasoline. It's been around since the year of the flood.

It come in a white plastic bottle, with a brush under the cap. Works very well, except it is messy stuff - work carefully.

Permatex is a gasket maker. i don't think that is what he is needing. Wick's or Aircraft Spruce should have it. It is a 2 part compound, just as nasty as JB weld, but much much better.

My Nomad is a 55. The O-ring I used I got from Ol'55 (East Coast Chevy) and it fit good. I have to say the tank was brand new and the neck was in very good condition so I got a nice snug fit which made a good seal. The only reason why I replaced the tank was because it was dented - not rusty.
